ADAMS COUNTY Ritzville
Adams County has asked the Northwest Regional Facilitators to make an assessment that would qualify the county for state and federal grant money. NRF, a Spokane-based firm specializing in housing needs assessments, has begun compiling data in Adams County. The group will look at population density, projected growth, employment, age and family information to decide Adams County’s future housing needs. The assessment should be complete by the first of the year.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
It’s never too early to start planning a party. The Republic Winterfest committee is busy organizing the 1999 celebration, set for Jan. 16-19. On the docket will be a parade, winter recreation trade show and athletic events using cross country skis, snowshoes, dog sleds and snowmobiles. GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
A homemade explosive device was discovered in the Potholes Reservoir area last week. The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Yakima was called in when a glass jar filled with gasoline, gunpowder, screws, nails and a half-charred fuse was found five miles south of Moses Lake. The second found in the area in two weeks, the device could potentially throw its contents over 40 yards if discharged. There are no suspects. Anyone with information on the explosives is urged to call the Grant County Sheriff at (800) 572-0119.
LINCOLN COUNTY Odessa
Ten years of fund raising has paid off for the Odessa Historical Society. Construction of a vintage-looking barn to house historical farm implements will begin in October. The steel structure, to be built by Davenport’s Bob Martin Construction, will be modeled after the historic J.F. Lauer barn south of Odessa. The 50-foot-by-100-foot building will be painted red with white trim and topped by a cupola.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
Looking for a day-care provider in Pend Oreille County? Northeast Washington Rural Resources is trying to help. The agency is hoping to add 80 more child-care slots in the Tri-County area through a series of mini-grants. Potential daycare owners are encouraged to apply for part of $25,000 available for the project. Those who already run a child-care facility are also encouraged to apply. A new physical therapy clinic is set to open in Cheney just after Labor Day weekend. Apex Physical Therapy will be located in the Farmers and Merchants Business Center on First Street. The clinic can be reached at (509) 559-5038.
STEVEN COUNTY Colville
Through tears of pain and sorrow, Colville resident Joy Ledgerwood kept moving. “I would kick myself and say, ‘I’m not out here for me. I’m out here for them,”’ says the 62-year-old widow. Ledgerwood, who lost her husband to leukemia in 1995, walked the Alaska Marathon to raise money for leukemia research. Calling the 26.2 mile race “the biggest bite I ever chewed,” Ledgerwood braved Alaska’s state bird, the mosquito, by the hundreds and kept walking in memory of her husband, Clive. Her efforts raised $3,000 for the Leukemia Society of America.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
The 1890’s photographs and text produced by Jane Gay during her three years on the Nez Perce Reservation are on exhibit this fall at Washington State University’s Museum of Anthropology. The exhibit, “With the Nez Perce During Allotment: E. Jane Gay, Her Majesty’s Cook and Photographer,” curated by Louise Barber of the University of Idaho, will be at the museum through Dec. 18.

BENEWAH COUNTY Plummer
Three new teachers have been added to the staff at Plummer Worley School District. Jenn Black will be teaching part-time preschool at Lakeside Elementary. Stephanie Richmond will teach high school special education. John Bisson will teach health and physical education at Lakeside High School, along with coaching the boys’ varsity basketball and middle school football teams.
BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
About 500 Washington Water Power customers will experience a scheduled power outage Wednesday morning. Sandpoint area residents on Bottlebay Road from U.S. Highway 95 to the end of the road can expect their power to go off at 9 a.m. and come on again at 11 a.m. The shutdown is necessary because of construction on railroad tracks in the area, according to WWP.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Coolin
The Boundary/Bonner Pomona Grange will meet at the Coolin hall Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. for a regular meeting followed by a turkey dinner. The Priest Lake Grange will meet to elect officers on Sept. 11, followed by a potluck luncheon. The election will start at noon, and all members are requested to attend.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Post Falls

LATAH COUNTY Moscow
The University of Idaho has received nearly $45,000 in grant money from the Idaho Commission on the Arts. Fifth District Sen. Gary Schroeder, R-Moscow, awarded the money, which is divided between five UI arts programs.
SHOSHONE COUNTY Wallace
Hecla Mining Co. donated $1,000 a year for the next three years to the Wallace Public Library Foundation. The grant will help the foundation in restoring the library to its original historic condition. It was donated on behalf of the mining company’s Lucky Friday Unit and the unit’s employees. It is the second grant received by the foundation for the project.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby
Volunteers are needed for street barricades at the Libby Nordicfest parade Saturday. Barricade attendants help keep the annual parade safe.
