Eagles Slip In I-Aa Poll
Despite a 31-14 thumping at the hands of Idaho, Eastern Washington is still ranked in the ESPN/USA Today NCAA Division I-AA top 25 coaches poll. The Eagles are 24th.
EWU was 15th in last week’s pre-season poll. Montana remains No. 3 behind McNeese State and Youngstown State. Northern Arizona is 17th.
EWU senior defensive tackle Avont Grant has received medical clearance to practice and play this week, but starting defensive end Dario Romero wasn’t as fortunate.
Grant and Romero, both from Lewis and Clark High School, were injured in the loss at Idaho. The Eagles play their Big Sky Conference and home opener Saturday against Portland State at 7:35 p.m. at Woodward Stadium.
Grant suffered a hard hit that caused some numbness in his body and forced him to miss the remainder of the game. Romero suffered a sprained knee and will miss 2-3 weeks.
Starting quarterback Griffin Garske (left shoulder) and backup defensive end Adam Kellar (sprained ankle) are also recovering from injuries. Garske is listed as probable for this week, Kellar questionable.
