Itron, Schlumberger Expand Relationship

Itron Inc. and Schlumberger announced Monday an expansion of relationships covering their meter and meter-reading businesses.

Three agreements follow by just three days completion of cross distribution and licensing pacts for the two companies’ metering technology in Europe.

The newest accords include a licensing agreement, memorandum of understanding and business associate agreement between Itron and Schlumberger Resource Management Services Inc., a Schlumberger subsidiary.

The licensing agreement allows Schlumberger to read Itron-made devices that broadcast readings from electric, natural gas and water meters.

Itron spokeswoman Mima Scarpelli said Schlumberger, a giant in electricity metering, does not have a presence in gas and water markets.

The memorandum of understanding calls for the two companies to work together on the development of more mobile and hand-held reading systems.

And the business associate contract will allow Schlumberger to resell Itron equipment.

The first test of cooperation under the memorandum of understanding will take place in Georgia, where Schlumberger will provide meter-reading services to the Flint Electric Membership Cooperative using technology compatible with systems made by both companies.
