Othello

With football season under way, the Othello Huskies are riding high in the state 2A rankings. The Huskies are ranked second in the state by Tuengel’s Washington Prep Football Report. “The rankings aren’t going to win any games for you or get you into the playoffs,” says coach Roger Hoell. Pullman is ranked first in the 2A action, with Chewelah, Eatonville, Meridian and Medical Lake rounding out the top six.

Although membership has its privileges, owning the local golf course can also come in handy. Ron Tatlow, owner and pro at Sheridan Greens Golf Club, recently bested the local competition at a benefit golf tournament. He jokes he finally played to his true potential because, when playing host, he usually tones down his game “to give others a chance.” His tournament partner, John Gianukakis, is the course greenskeeper.

Have trouble understanding the legal system? The People’s Law School can help. Returning this fall to Big Bend Community College, the 10-part series is aimed at citizens who want more knowledge of the judicial system. The class will meet Wednesday nights to discuss workers’ compensation and Social Security law, job discrimination/harassment and firing, parental rights, victim’s rights and immigration laws for employers. Davenport

Parents concerned about substance abuse at the local school will host a forum tonight. Corinne Allen and Pam Greenwood ask all parents, teachers and students with an opinion on drug use by Davenport teens to meet at the high school library at 7 p.m. Random drug testing will be discussed. Guest speaker will be Jim Preston of the Lincoln County Alcohol/Drug Center.

Pend Oreille County

Metaline Falls

Giving a concert and lecture titled “Who Killed Classical Music,” Selkirk Schools’ music director Donivan Johnson will take the Cutter Theatre stage Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Johnson uses humor to provide a thought-provoking look at music history. Audience members not only hear a lecture and music from his podium, a piano bench, but help Johnson compose an original song for the occasion. The event gets under way at 7:30 p.m.

Deer Park Eagles Aerie No. 3564 will hold its third annual flea market/ swap meet Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge, 12 W. South Ave., Deer Park. For more information, contact the lodge at 276-2923.

There will be few extras for students in the Colville School District this year. Blaming a decline in enrollment, Superintendent Rick Cole announced the annual budget had been trimmed $700,000. “It’s a very tight budget this year,” says Cole, adding welfare reform is responsible for a loss of nearly 70 students. With low-income folks unable to find work in rural areas, many have headed for the city. The state funds education based on the number of kids enrolled.

Java Llamas, which boasts it has been “a tradition since yesterday,” recently opened its doors in downtown Pullman. Owned and operated by 20-year-old Travis Luther, Java Llamas features specialty coffees and pastries imported from the Vox in Moscow. The decor is noted as early garage sale with many furniture items being “rescued.” Free live jazz is performed on Wednesdays.

St. Maries

A bluegrass jam session is set for Sept. 17-19. The session will be held at the Misty Meadows campground along the St. Joe River. Attendance is free, but park entrance costs $5. The public is welcome.

Explorer Scout Dustin Kralik received a commendation award from the Bonner County Sheriff’s Department. While working the Sandpoint Marina docks during the summer boating season, Kralik performed 606 boat safety inspections.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. tonight in the main courtroom at the Boundary County Courthouse. The agenda includes a review of the Boundary County Zoning map and a discussion of possible amendments. The public is invited to attend.

Moscow

Retired Moscow couple Robert and Betty Ann Robinson won $125,000 as one of five national winners of the Reader’s Digest Association sweepstakes. Robert Robinson, 74, has subscribed to Reader’s Digest since his mother signed him up for a $25 lifetime subscription as a high school graduation present. For the past 20 years, his wife Betty Ann diligently sent in the sweepstakes forms. They received their check last week at the Bank of Pullman in Moscow.

Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls Rotary clubs are hosting a new Rotaract Club for young adults aged 18-30. Interested individuals are urged to attend an informational meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. Rotaract Clubs organize activities in professional development, leadership development and service projects.

Silver Valley Habitat for Humanity will hold a walk-a-thon on Saturday. The walk-a-thon will begin at Kellogg Middle School along the rails-to-trails route toward Elizabeth Park. Registration is at 9 a.m. and walk-a-thon begins at 9:30 a.m. For more information call 752-5821.

Libby

The livestock sale at the Lincoln County Fair set a new record of $83,430.75, 42 percent higher than last year’s sale. Sixty-nine animals were sold at the fair. The average beef sale price was $1.66 per pound, while swine averaged $3.07 per pound, and lambs averaged $5.89 per pound.
