Bamonte’S Thin Lead Over Malby Grows
Former Pend Oreille County Sheriff Tony Bamonte appears to have sewn up the Democratic nomination in his bid to reclaim the office.
Bamonte’s thin lead over incumbent Doug Malby grew to 62 Thursday - 1,156 to 1,094 - when absentee ballots were counted.
Election officials expect only a handful of additional ballots to be returned with valid postmarks before the election is certified on Sept. 25.
Retired Anchorage Police Lt. Jerry Weeks won the Republican nomination.
Thursday’s counting of absentee ballots also appears to have confirmed the passage of a one-year, $58,000 operating levy for the Newport Cemetery District. The measure, which needs a 60 percent majority for passage, has 61.7 percent support - 1,610 to 998.
