Wwp Awarded High Marks For Efficiency
Washington Water Power Co. remains among the nation’s most efficient utilities, according to rankings published this month in Public Utilities Fortnightly.
The survey of 140 utility holding companies analyzed the cost of inputs like fuel, capital and labor and output measured in megawatts.
WWP and three other Northwest companies received the highest score of 1.0, based in large part on their significant hydropower resources.
The results were refined by counting the time the companies were used as peers in assessments of less efficient companies.
Taking that into account, Idaho Power Co. was ranked first overall, Montana Power Co. third and WWP tied for fifth.
PacifiCorp tied for eighth.
WWP rate analyst Bruce Folsom said the company suffered somewhat in the comparisons because the 1995-1996 years used in compiling the scores included the November 1996 ice storm and associated expenditures of more than $17 million.
The company also was involved in a failed effort to merge with Sierra Pacific Resources during that period, he noted.
