Firefighter Mda Benefit Today At Mall

The second annual “Firefighters Go Hard for MDA” competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Spokane Valley Mall.

The competition will feature firefighters dragging 50-pound hoses to flaming cars and to the top of a three-story tower, along with other events.

Several Valley firefighters have been training for the event, which raises funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Proceeds will will be used to provide a comprehensive clinic program for Inland Northwest residents affected by neuromuscular disease.

Rockford fair next weekend

The annual Southeast Spokane County Fair runs next weekend in Rockford.

The free community festival kicks off Friday and continues through Sunday.

Along with livestock judging, there will be parades, musical entertainment in the town park and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

A carnival will remain open until about 10 p.m. each night.

The event is expected to draw about 4,000 people to the small town of 550, located just south of the Valley.

Green Bluff Apple Festival begins

The annual Green Bluff Apple Festival begins today and continues each weekend through October.

Along with apples, cider and other local produce, attractions include music, food, crafts, corn mazes and bus tours of the orchard district north of the Valley.

Participating farms are marked with big, red apple signs.

West Valley SCOPE meets Thursday

West Valley SCOPE will hold its monthly community meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Millwood Town Hall, 9103 E. Frederick.

Jim Finke, former candidate for Spokane County sheriff, will be guest speaker.

Square dance introduction

Would-be square dancers are invited to a free introductory dance at 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Western Dance Center.

The dance is a fun way to become acquainted with square dancing and with upcoming fall season classes.

The 2-hour event is sponsored by the Western Dance Association, Spokane Area Council and Spokane Callers and Cuers Association.

The Western Dance Center is at 1901 N. Sullivan Road, just north of Interstate 90.
