Vandals Shake Off Loss, Level Cincy

Senior Beth Craig slammed 22 kills to surpass the 1,000-kill mark Friday as Idaho made up for an earlier loss to UNLV with a 7-15, 15-8, 4-15, 15-11, 15-13 win over Cincinnati in the Carolina Classic volleyball tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Craig also had 20 digs in recording her second double-double of the year. She ranks 10th on UI’s career kill list with 1,007.

The Vandals (6-3), who fell to UNLV 15-6, 15-12, 14-16, 15-11, also got a career-high 20 kills and seven digs from freshman Heather Kniss in the win over Cincy (5-5).

Craig and Kniss also paced UI in its loss to UNLV. Kniss had a team-high 14 kills and 12 digs against the Rebels (6-1), while Craig recorded 12 kills and a .281 hitting percentage.

The Vandals play George Mason and host North Carolina today, before returning home to face Washington State on Tuesday.

Lindsay Baines had 21 kills and Kimi Towery made 22 digs and handed out 44 assists in leading North Idaho College (10-5, 2-2) to a 15-11, 7-15, 15-17, 15-10, 15-10 Scenic West Athletic Conference win over Snow College (8-8, 1-3).

NIC’s Anita Rathe finished with a .355 hitting percentage as the Cardinals hit .237 as a team.

Eastern Washington suffered its first defeat of the season, falling to Indiana in four games in the first round of the Hoosiers’ four-team tournament in Bloomington, Ind.

The Eagles (6-1) won the first game 15-10, before Indiana (5-2) captured the last three 15-6, 15-6, 15-8.

Devon Bakken and Renee Purdy each made 12 kills and visiting Willamette (2-2, 2-1) hit .317 in a 15-6, 15-9, 15-2 Northwest Conference win over Whitworth (2-2, 1-2).

Soccer

Washington State’s Deka Dewitt and Lindsey Millspaugh each scored two goals and freshman Valerie Whitemaine added the first of her collegiate career as the Cougars thumped visiting Portland State 5-0.

WSU (2-2-2) scored four of its goals in the second half in handing PSU (1-5) its fifth consecutive loss.

Lindy Brown, Beth Thomason and Sunny Miller each scored a goal as Oregon State (2-3) opened its home season with a 3-0 win over Gonzaga (1-4-1).

Tennis

Andrea Reisz, Melissa Pine, Tamara Filipovic and Moniek Van de Ven all scored singles victories for Washington State in the second day of the Brigham Young University Invitational women’s tournament in Provo, Utah.
