WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY

Othello

The Lions Mobile Health Clinic will provide free screenings Tuesday for glaucoma, diabetes, hearing and visual acuity, as well as high blood pressure. The public is invited, including those under 18 with parental permission. The Othello Lions Club is sponsoring the mobile clinic’s visit. It starts at 10 a.m. in the Akins parking lot.

FERRY COUNTY

Republic

Motorists beware! The speed limit in school zones has changed. In an effort to promote safety, the Republic City Council dropped the speed limit of 45 mph - 35 mph when children are present - to an overall limit on eastbound Highway 20 of 35 mph. When the crosswalk lights are flashing, the official speed limit will be 25 mph. Police will enforce the new speed limits as soon as signs are posted.

GRANT COUNTY

Moses Lake

Seeing Moses Lake State Park on the initial short list for possible closure, the local City Council is taking action. The city says it will consider taking over the park if nearby land, developed and undeveloped, is included. Gov. Gary Locke will look over the closure list, which includes parks statewide, on Tuesday.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Wilbur

With the official potato harvest finished for the year, field owners are inviting the public to glean the fields for missed veggies. Local farmers ask only that gleaners request permission and stay out of fields where machinery is being used.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Usk

There is an open seat on the Port of Pend Oreille board of commissioners. David Garrett, who acted as commissioner for District 3 that covers the northern half of the county, recently died. Those wishing to fill his position are asked to send a letter of interest and resume to the Port District on Black Road by 8 a.m. Sept. 30.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Deer Park

The new Deer Park Family Care Clinic, located next to Deer Park Hospital, opened Aug. 31. The 9,000-square-foot clinic will be staffed by Dr. Edward Maloney, Dr. Edward Figueroa, Dr. Julie Moran and Dr. Daniel Stoop.

STEVENS COUNTY

Colville

Arriving at a loud party just after midnight last Sunday, Colville police officers said they were told to “get a search warrant” by revelers. “We were just complying with their request,” said Chief Damond Meshishnek, who obtained a search warrant by telephone within 20 minutes. Eight juveniles were charged with possession or consumption, with one adult, Madonna L. Regis, 21, charged with furnishing liquor to minors.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Pullman

United Way agencies from Whitman and Latah counties will host Family Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Compton Union Building at WSU. A variety of family activities will kick off the annual fund drive for the two agencies. Peter Alsop, a children’s entertainer, and storyteller Diane Ferlatte will be special guests. BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

Police are investigating the theft of a CD player and business portfolio Sept. 6 from a vehicle. Meghan Murphy-Lenz is hoping the criminals will be caught and return the portfolio because it contained information needed for her job. Anyone with information about the burglary or finding the portfolio should contact the sheriff’s office.

BONNER COUNTY

Clark Fork

A boil water advisory is still in effect in Clark Fork six weeks after testing showed the presence of total coliform bacteria in the city’s water system. The Division of Environmental Quality will not lift the boil order until some form of a chlorination system is in place.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

Boundary County citizens have until Nov. 13 to reserve their current license plate number. To confirm your number or request a number not yet taken, go to the Boundary County Motor Vehicle License Department in the courthouse. For information, call the MVD at 267-7613.

KOOTENAI COUNTY

Coeur d’Alene

“The Great Escape,” sponsored by the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association, is the first-ever North American fire drill. Citizens are urged to join families across North America in developing a home escape plan and practicing it on Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. The drill is part of Fire Prevention Week Oct. 4-10. Disaster Dog, a new member of the Panhandle Chapter of the American Red Cross disaster preparedness team, will visit schools, businesses and organizations throughout September and October promoting his message of Safety First.

LATAH COUNTY

Genesee

The Genesee school district’s spring break has been shortened to make up for a week’s delay in the start of school.

The construction delay also will mean canceled teacher conferences on Dec. 7 and March 15. The traditional weeklong spring break will be shortened to just three days. School will still end June 11.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Cataldo

The Old Mission is having three of its six columns replaced with the help of three grants. The columns are being replaced after rot was found in the base plates during an inspection by a historical architect with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. After the column repairs are completed, the old church will be repainted.

Libby

American Field Service will hold meetings in Libby and Troy for students interested in spending a school year abroad. The first meeting will be in the Libby Middle School library Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. The second meeting will be in the French room of Troy High School at 8 p.m. Oct. 1.
