ADAMS COUNTY Othello
Othello Community Hospital recently introduced a quartet of new doctors, including family practice physicians Lance Petersen and Grace Gamponia. Hung “Gabe” Miu comes to Othello from Rochester, N.Y., where he was trained in obstetrics and gynecology. Pediatrician Shakti Matta rounds out the list of newcomers.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
Hoping to beautify the public park, the town has put out an “allpoints bulletin” for flower bulbs. Citizens with bulbs to spare are asked to bring them to Patterson Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. Helpers will receive hot coffee, cookies and juice.
GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
The old saying “hitting the hay” took on new meaning last week as firefighters hit a giant haystack fire with everything they had. Six pumpers, three tenders, a 2,500-gallon water truck and a portable fire hydrant were used to battle the haystack fire north of Moses Lake at 11939 Road M on Thursday. About 960 tons of hay - equal to nearly a year’s harvest of 125 acres - burned, at an estimated loss of $58,000 to $96,000. The fire is under investigation.
LINCOLN COUNTY Harrington
Davenport, Wash., contracting firm Halme Construction was the low bidder at $552,000 for wastewater facilities in Harrington, a town of 487 residents.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
An inter-church community women’s conference will be held Saturday with the theme “A Woman of Worth.” A host of local churches will be participating along with guest speaker Phyllis Bennett of Lake Oswego, Ore. The conference will get under way at 8:30 a.m. at the Newport Assembly of God Church.
SPOKANE COUNTY Deer Park
A citizens committee met recently to look into the feasibility of creating a skateboard park. Possible locations include a vacant site behind the civic center, Mix and Swinyard parks and the Weber Road Sports Complex near City Hall. The three committee members agreed to expand their ranks before their next meeting.
STEVENS COUNTY Colville
Talented hands in Stevens County are getting ready for the Piecemakers Quilt Show. Featuring more than 275 quilts, the show will include examples of several quilting disciplines. Scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Colville United Methodist Church, the event also will include raffles, numerous demonstrations, music, door prizes and a quilting bee. The quilt show will start at 10 a.m. both days, and admission is $2.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
Registrations are being accepted for the eighth annual Washington State University Veterans Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday at the WSU golf course. BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
St. Maries High School recently received a $150,000 anonymous donation for volleyball scholarships. A St. Maries High School Girls Volleyball Team Scholarship Award will be given each year in the name of a former Lumberjack volleyball player. The donor suggested the first award be called the Lauri Sampson Scholarship. Sampson played for the Lumberjacks from 1980-82. Former team members will be selected by lottery in future years. John Cordell, principal of St. Maries High School, said the trustee who represents the donor said the donor admires the volleyball program and wanted a scholarship established in its name.
BONNER COUNTY Hope
Hope Mayor Larry Keith got a surprise when a sport utility vehicle slipped out of gear and rolled into his home on Monday. According to police reports, no one was in the vehicle, and the cause of the accident is unknown. No one was injured, but sheriff’s deputies reported $5,000 in damage to the vehicle and estimated $2,000 worth of damage to the house.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
Bonners Ferry has put a plan for a $9 million high school and junior high school on the Nov. 3 generalelection ballot. A grass-roots citizens committee voted unanimously earlier this month to add the new schools to the ballot. Taxpayers would pay less than half the interest required under a general obligation bond because of tax exemptions.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Post Falls
Post Falls Community Presbyterian Church may have a new home by the year 2000. Community Partners of Post Falls is leading an effort to relocate the church built in 1890. The church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984 and was the first church built in Kootenai County. The modern Presbyterian Church is selling the old building to Community Partners for $1.
LATAH COUNTY Moscow
Michele Stakelum Ney, University of Idaho assistant professor of theater arts, will represent the United States at the Prague Quadrennial Exposition. The international theater design exhibition and conference will be held in the Czech Republic next June. Ney received the invitation for her costume designs for the university’s production of “Elixir of Love” three years ago. It is the first time the University of Idaho has been included in the delegation to this exposition.
SHOSHONE COUNTY Smelterville
Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund cleanup, air cranes from Erickson Air Crane Co. of Central Point, Ore., have been sent to revegetate 200 acres in the Silver Valley as the first phase of a three-year project. The helicopter will be used to drop 8 tons of lime on the east and west hillsides of Government Gulch and the hillsides on the west side of Deadwood Gulch; crews will follow with 2,600 gallons of hydroseeding and mulch.

LINCOLN COUNTY Eureka
Eureka teenager Adam Graham has announced his candidacy for Lincoln County treasurer as a registered write-in candidate. Graham, 17, graduated from American School, a correspondence high school, and has completed paralegal training through McGraw High School. Graham said he is running to reassert that government should be the servant of the people and not their master. He also said he wants to combat voter apathy, especially among young voters.
