Fun Run Kicks Off Valleyfest Activities
Today’s the day for Valleyfest. As many as 20,000 people are expected at Terrace View Park for the Valley’s annual end-of-summer blast.
The action begins at 8 a.m., when the starter’s gun goes off for the Valleyfest Fun Run. The half-mile race course starts at Sunrise Elementary and ends at Terrace View Park. All participants will be eligible in a drawing for prizes donated by Target, Washington Trust Bank, Valley Best-way and Halpin’s. Check-in and late registration begins at 7 a.m.
Those who worked up an appetite in the fun run -and anyone else who is hungry - can chow down at the pancake breakfast at Terrace View Park. The breakfast, sponsored by URM, WWP, Yoke’s and Park Lane Motel, will be served from 8 to 11 a.m.
Cost is $4:50 for adults and $3.50 for kids. All proceeds go to the Valleyfest Foundation Grant Fund for Youth.
The Valleyfest Parade starts at 9 a.m. in the parking lot at Shopko on East Sprague Avenue, then heads south on McDonald Road, turns at Maltese Road and ends at Terrace View Park. The parade has drawn more than 100 entries, including the Angus Scott Pipe Band and Accordian Joe. Wheelsport is awarding prizes to kids riding the most creatively decorated bicycles in the parade.
Dozens of booths set up in the park will offer free activities, ranging from Bingo to a stamp-design contest to hands-on science projects. The booths open at 10 a.m.
The Spokane Youth Symphony, the Inland Northwest Dance Association and others will offer entertainment on the main stage throughout the day.
The popular band Men in the Making will perform its rock ‘n’ roll oldies show from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Just prior to the Men in the Making concert, free frozen yogurt from TCBY will be handed out at The Spokesman-Review’s Valleyfest booth. Distribution starts at 2 p.m. and will continue until the frozen yogurt is gone.
