Lufthansa Cargo Orders Six Freighters

Lufthansa Cargo has ordered six Boeing MD-11 freighters, exercising three options from a previous order and placing a firm order for three additional planes. Deliveries are to begin in 2000 and continue through 2001.

No value was given for the order, but Boeing price lists peg MD-11s at $129 million to $140 million each. At those prices, the order would be worth $774 million to $840 million.

Boeing inherited the MD-11 line when it bought McDonnell Douglas last year. Boeing said in June that it would phase out the jumbo jets, which are built in Long Beach, Calif., with the last one to be built in February 2000.

Boeing spokesman John Thom said the Lufthansa order won’t extend the production of the jets. The planes scheduled for delivery in 2001 will go into storage until the German airline is ready for them, he said.
