Ceremony To Mark Ewu Library Upgrade

A public rededication of the expanded John F. Kennedy Library at Eastern Washington University will begin at 2 p.m. Friday in Cheney.

A $22 million addition to and renovation of the library was completed over the summer. A portion of the state money also was used to reconstruct the central campus mall, including a stepping stone stream designed by Seattle artist Gloria Bornstein.

The rededication will be held in front of the library. An open house and reception follows at 3 p.m.

The addition nearly doubled the size of the 31-year-old library, from 86,800 square feet to 157,000 square feet. The building quadrupled student seating to 1,200, wired 250 study carrels and installed enough shelves to support 21 miles of books. The library also has a special collections reading room and the county’s largest collection of federal documents.

“At last, we have a library that is worthy of the students and faculty who study and work here,” said Pat Kelley, dean of libraries.

A fund-raiser for the library’s collection will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 when Eastern’s Friends of the Library present a “Death and Dessert” mystery theater. Tickets are $50. Call 359-2264.
