Adams County Othello
Local kids are jump-starting their day with breakfast at school. The local school district recently held a breakfast race to encourage kids to eat school breakfast. In six weeks, the students broke the existing breakfast count record by eating 711 morning meals. Dining coordinator Lance Wells was recently honored for his commitment to serving breakfast. Wells uses creative contests and promotions to get children to start their day right.
Ferry County Republic
Low-income families can pick up free clothes on Wednesdays. Tabbetha Gilbert, a member of AmeriCorps, will oversee the clothing giveaway each week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Needy families can choose three outfits per person, once each month. Grant County Ephrata
To encourage spring cleaning, the county is offering free dump days at the Grant County Landfill near Ephrata. Free days are scheduled April 14 through 25. To dump, residents must bring the coupon from their March electrical bill. Residential waste up to 10 cubic yards will be permitted. Those using the coupon at county drop boxes will get a $3 price reduction.
Lincoln County Creston
Thanks to a newly received grant, unsupervised probation will be history in Lincoln County. The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission offered the District Court a $25,000 start-up grant to implement probation services. After a year, the county will pick up the tab for the probation officer and related expenses. Probation fees are expected to pay for the program once it’s up and running.
Pend Oreille County Newport
Reading activist Bernice Shively was recently honored by U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton. Shively is responsible for implementing the First Book program to get books into the hands of young, needy people throughout the county. Gorton awarded Shively an Innovation in Education Award for her hard work and vision. She has spent many hours promoting literacy in the area.
Spokane County Deer Park
A spaghetti feed to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network will be Saturday at the Eagles Lodge, W. 12 South Ave., from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under. All donations stay in the community in which they were made to benefit local participating hospitals. Meanwhile, the CMN of the Inland Northwest selected 4-year-old Kyle Todd as the network’s Champion of the State. Todd and his family will travel to the White House in June. Todd almost died two years ago after suffering bacterial meningitis.
Stevens County Chewelah
Leslie Wallner, a junior at Jenkins High School, is the official hostess of Chewelah. She was chosen as that town’s Junior Miss at a recent pageant. Sara Riley and Sony Tarble were chosen as alternates. The trio will grace the Chewelah community float this spring and summer at regional festivals.
Whitman County Pullman
Washington State University English professor Paul Brians, who built a Web site called Common Errors in English, was notified last week that the site was selected as a Hot Site by USA Today Online. The site at http://www.wsu.edu/%7Ebrians/errors/index.html explains that surely you didn’t mean “nip it in the butt,” or “Cadillac converter,” and gives explanations for proper usage. It also offers tips for choosing between similar words such as “hippie” and “hippy” or “pompom” and “pompon.” There is even a section called Non-Errors, about “usages people keep telling you are wrong, but which are actually standard in English.”

Benewah County Plummer
The Coeur d’Alene Tribe has reached an agreement with Rayonier to purchase its mill and property in Plummer. The tribe has committed more than $1 million of its money and has applied for $1.6 million in federal financing to make sure the mill will reopen on the site.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Wednesday is the deadline for applying for the Northern Lights scholarships. Four $500 scholarships will be awarded to applicants who are graduating high school seniors entering their first year of college or currently enrolled in college and are members of Northern Lights. Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
North Idaho College will hold an informational meeting about its Human Services Program tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. in Room 223A on the second floor of the Hedlund Building. Graduates of the program are prepared to provide support and services to individuals who need assistance in leading self-directed lives. A two-year Associate of Applied Science degree or a 11-month certificate are offered by the program.
Latah County Moscow
The University of Idaho College of Law’s Northwest Dispute Resolution Institute is offering two basic mediation courses and two specialized seminars May 17-21. The two basic mediation courses, 40 hours each, cover civil and family mediation. The two specialized courses offered are a 16-hour logic and legal reasoning class and a 12-hour advanced legal writing course. MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
Former Lincoln County Commissioner Larry Dolezal is seeking dismissal of felony charges against him, saying the state has produced no evidence he tried to deceive anyone when filing claims for mileage and meal reimbursements. In question are numerous claims for mileage trips to Dolezal’s church in Yaak and meal claims for lunches eaten on days other than regular meeting days. Dolezal filed a motion March 24 to move the trial out of the county based on extensive publicity. The trial date has been set for May 17 at the Lincoln County Courthouse.
