Eastern Signs Two Jc Transfers
Eastern Washington University men’s basketball coach Steve Aggers has signed a pair of high-scoring California junior college transfers.
Jamal Jones, from Santa Rosa Junior College, and Delwin Corner, from Monterey Peninsula JC, will play for the Eagles next season.
Jones is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound point guard who averaged 16 points and six assists per game while leading Santa Rose deep into the California State Junior College Tournament. He was selected as an All-Bay Valley Conference selection.
Corner, a 6-7, 205-pound wing player from New Orleans, averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists while earning first team All-South Coast Conference honors.
Eastern signed another pair of California players during the early signing period last November, Holmes from Fontana High School and Tony Hoggatts from Glendale Junior College.
Baseball
Bookie Gates and Jason Grove hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Washington State Cougars a come-from-behind 14-13 victory over Gonzaga in a homer-filled non-conference game at Pullman.
The Cougars (17-12) snapped a four-game losing streak. Gonzaga, in a five-game skid, saw its record fall to 11-14-1.
There were 11 home runs in the game, including Jason Bay’s 10th for Gonzaga and a pair by WSU’s Steve Gleason.
With WSU, which had trailed 12-4, behind by one run in the eighth, Gates, a freshman, tied the game with a drive over the left-field fence. Grove followed with his eighth homer.
Central Washington University right-hander Scott Earle earned his 23rd career victory and tied a school record for complete games by pitching the Wildcats (10-13) to an 8-5 victory over Whitworth (11-18) in a non-conference game at Ellensburg.
Earle struck out nine while improving his 1999 record to 6-2. The victory gave him 21 career complete games.
Ryan McCarthy and Tommy Pesacreta doubled home the decisive runs in the last of the seventh inning. Whitworth had gained a 5-5 tie in the top half of the inning on Miguel Saldin’s two-run homer and Nate Lynch’s RBI double.
Matt Armitage singled home Whitworth’s other two runs in the third inning.
Softball
Andi Weissenfluh singled home the winning run in the 10th inning of the opener and Nicole Christian drove in five runs in the nightcap as Eastern Oregon (20-5) downed Whitworth (5-17) 5-4 and 15-0 in a doubleheader at Franklin Park.
Tiffanie Vander Veen had three hits and drove in two runs for Whitworth in the first game.
Christian, who hit a solo home run in the opener, belted a grand slam as the Mountaineers scored 10 times in the third inning of the second game.
