Othello

The city has named Debbie Sanchez recreation coordinator. Sanchez will coordinate three youth programs, including summer parks, after-school group and the swimming pool. The position, as well as programs, were cut back to half-time because of budgetary constraints. Sanchez says one of her goals is to open a breakfast and lunch program during the summer parks program. Studies show many local kids go hungry when school is not in session.

Ferry County

Republic

Ferry County Pride month kicks off Saturday with a spring cleaning day. Scrap metal and yard waste will be accepted at the Torboy Transfer station. Yard waste is free, but metals will cost $10 per pickup load. Large appliances and car parts will not be accepted. Republic residents may call City Hall to have their garbage picked up.

Grand Coulee

After her night of glory, newly crowned Grand Coulee Dam Area Junior Miss Rose Butterfly was immediately humble. “I still have to go to work in the morning,” she said. Butterfly performed a traditional Indian dance for her talent. The judges deliberated for 45 minutes before naming Butterfly as Junior Miss. Katie Kennedy was chosen as runner-up.

Lincoln County

Almira

The local Lions Club has contracted with the city to head up a community spring cleanup. Each household will receive a $5 cleanup coupon good toward the Lions picking up trash. Anything over the $5 amount would be paid directly to the Lions. The city would also pay the club a flat $1,500 for its services, with an estimated $600 profit after expenses. The cleanup fund-raiser is scheduled for the first weekend in May.

Pend Oreille County

Cusick

Officials from the state teachers retirement system are still investigating Cusick School Superintendent Charles Crickman, who was put on paid administrative leave last month. Details of the investigation have not been made public. The probe is expected to take another two weeks.

Deer Park

The Deer Park Softball Association is signing up both co-ed and men’s teams for spring/summer softball. The deadline for team rosters to be turned in is April 16. For information or to get a roster, call (509) 276-2983.

Antique fanciers will have to pencil in Aug. 6, 7 and 8 on their calendar. That’s when the Colville Rendezvous gets under way and this year, it is featuring antique booths. Dealers from around the region are invited to set up booths. To rent a space, contact Marilyn Bosin at (509) 684-5973.

Whitman County Library will host a meet-the-author program featuring Verla Kay, of Soulsbyville, Calif., for her first picture book, “Gold Fever,” April 21 at 1 p.m. The Tekoa branch will hold an additional program and book-signing at 7 p.m. the same day. The children’s book about an idealistic farmer’s quest for gold and glory during the Gold Rush of 1849 has received starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus, School Library Journal and Amazon.com.

The Idaho Department of Lands St. Joe Area recently sold the Hobbit Pole and Windfall Pass timber sales. Carney Products Company, Ltd. was awarded the bid for the Windfall Pass sale with a final bid of $807,424.50. The sale had an appraised value of $536,805. Idaho Forest Industries was awarded the Windfall Pass sale with a bid of $275,280. The appraised value was $196,434.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

Four positions with the East Bonner County Library District are up for re-election in May. Declaration of candidacy forms are available at the district offices of the Sandpoint and Clark Fork libraries and must be filed by April 30. Coeur d’Alene

North Idaho College vocal groups will perform in “Spring Harmony” on Saturday. The concert is the first of four scheduled this spring. Songs about spring will be performed by the concert choir, madrigal singers and the men’s and women’s ensembles. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Schuler Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $1 for students.

Moscow

Plans for Moscow School District property on Joseph Street and the need for ball fields will be the main focus of the Moscow City Council’s annual goal-setting retreat Friday and Saturday. The council accepted reports and plans for the 25 acres of the 1912 high school and Joseph Street property at a Monday meeting.

Shoshone County

Kellogg

The Kellogg Planning and Zoning Commission approved a permit for the expansion of Insulspan Idaho, Inc. The permit, which must get final approval from the city of Kellogg, would allow Insulspan to build a manufacturing/ processing plant to construct prefabricated walls. The facility would be built in two stages, with construction on the first phase beginning this summer.

Libby

The University of Great Falls will offer a master’s degree in information systems in Libby beginning this fall. The master’s is designed to prepare practitioners for positions as systems managers. Courses are taught by UGF faculty on the Great Falls campus utilizing various forms of technology including the Internet. The degree is being offered in addition to the 10 undergraduate programs currently available in Libby through UGF’s distance learning program.
