ADAMS COUNTY Othello
The Adams County Economic Development Council reports it is helping area businesses prosper. ACEDC employees worked with 42 businesses during the fiscal year ending June 1998. Twelve of those clients have finished or are still constructing their sites. ACEDC projects another good year with 111 new jobs in the county.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
Those wishing to attend an orchestra performance need travel no further than Republic. Local conductors Dr. Joel Kabakov and Jack Konigsmark are putting together the Highlands Philharmonic Orchestra. GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
Arson is said to be the cause of a string of haystack fires last weekend. The Grant County Sheriff’s Department received the first fire call at 10 p.m. Between then and 12:12 a.m., four other haystack fires were reported in the area.
LINCOLN COUNTY Reardan
With grant money running out in August, Reardan is scrambling to keep its second police officer. Creative fund-raising is the only way City Manager Bruce Johnson can think of to keep Officer Ken Lesperance. The “Keep the Cop” campaign includes a program through Excel Communications, in which the city earns $50 for every subscriber it sends the company. The town is also looking at grants.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
Former sheriff’s deputy Andrew Fritz was awarded $3,154 in unpaid overtime after settling a legal claim with county commissioners. The amount was for 170 hours of investigative time spent at his home and other expenses related to a major animal cruelty case. Fritz is now a legal clerk living in Yakima.
SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane
The Eastern Washington Term Limits Action Committee has announced a new Internet site at: termlimits.webjump.com.
Committee members said they have developed a mailing list of 2,000 supporters or volunteers in their campaign to get Rep. George Nethercutt not to seek a fourth two-year term in 2000. In his first campaign in 1994, Nethercutt said he would serve only three terms, and won support of advocates of term limits. Now, he has not ruled out running for a fourth term.
STEVENS COUNTY Colville
North country residents can now earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice without leaving town. The WSU Stevens County Learning Center has added criminal justice to its list of degrees. Those wishing to study this line of work can begin in the fall. There are currently five programs in Colville, including social science, human development, business administration and agriculture which offer degrees.
WHITMAN COUNTY St. John
Everyone is invited to the annual St. John Stockshow and Community Fair April 22-25. The family event features animal exhibits and plenty of food and fun. The Hog Jog fun run gets under way Saturday morning, followed by a grand parade, flower show, horse show and Pig Putt golf tournament. KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene
The 17th annual Spring Dash is scheduled for April 18. The 5-mile race begins and ends at North Idaho College. registration is $12 for entries postmarked by today. Late registration is $16. About 2,500 people participated in the event last year. The race is a fund-raiser for United Way of Kootenai County.
Latah County Moscow
Targhee Hall, currently a men’s cooperative residence hall at the University of Idaho, will become a theme hall for students in the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences this fall. Other theme halls being added include a College of Education hall, a Freshman Year Experience hall for men, and an engineering hall in the Wallace Complex. The women’s Freshman Year Experience hall is being expanded from one to two floors. UI Dean of Students Bruce Pitman said the university is creating a model living and learning environment with the halls.
Shoshone County Kellogg
The Valley Little League will hold a clean-up day Saturday at 8 a.m. Parents, players and coaches are needed to help prepare fields and concession stands for the upcoming season. Fields needing to be cleaned are located at Canyon School, Pinehurst School, Kellogg Middle School and the field at City Hall.
