Heather Briggs is glad to have her dog Delilah. The dog, a Rottweiler/ Akita mix, woke Briggs and her family just in time to escape their burning home last week. The fire started on the main floor, where Briggs, her boyfriend, baby daughter and mother were all sleeping. The home was fully engulfed before firefighters arrived.

Pend Oreille County

Metaline Falls

Spring weather caused a two-day traffic snarl in the northern reaches of the county recently. A mud and debris slide from Lehigh Hill covered a county road and wiped out a portion of the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad trestle south of Metaline Falls. County workers managed to get the road open by the following afternoon, but the railroad is still buried under mounds of dirt.

Colville

Orange cones are everywhere as construction on Highway 20, Colville’s Third Avenue, is under way. Existing sidewalks and roadway will be removed from Main to Aladdin Road. When finished, there will not only be a new driving surface, but storm drainage system, water lines, curbs and sidewalks.

Whitman County

Members of fraternities and sororities at Washington State University will host a fun run, clothing drive and the annual Pullman Family Day festivities as part of the annual WSU Greek Week starting today. The fun run/walk will be held on the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail from 11 a.m. 1 p.m. Runners from each chapter will collect pledges with proceeds benefiting the Gladish Community Center.

Pullman Family Day, a free children’s carnival, will be held at the Gladish Community Center gym today from noon to 3 p.m. The carnival will feature WSU athletes, Butch the Cougar mascot and the WSU Cheer Squad.

Two more sessions of free tax preparation services are available for all middle- to low-income residents of Boundary County through Thursday. The 17th annual Spring Dash is scheduled for April 18. The five-mile race begins and ends at North Idaho College. Late registration is $16. The race is a fund-raiser for United Way of Kootenai County.

Targhee Hall, currently a men’s cooperative residence hall at the University of Idaho, will become a theme hall for students in the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences this fall. Other theme halls being added include a College of Education hall, a Freshman Year Experience hall for men, and an engineering hall in the Wallace Complex. The women’s Freshman Year Experience hall is being expanded from one to two floors.

The Valley Little League will hold a cleanup day today at 8 a.m. Parents, players and coaches are needed to help prepare fields and concession stands for the upcoming season.
