Taxing Job

Tax time at McGuire’s Irish Pub and Brewery in Pensacola, Fla., has the restaurant’s accountant climbing the walls. Jim Akin stood on a small ladder Monday as he began the annual inventory of dollar bills that customers have signed and stapled to the walls and ceiling over the past 22 years. “We count it every year, and we pay taxes on the growth in it,” said owner William “McGuire” Martin. “We treat it as an asset and we borrow against it and so forth.” It usually takes about three days to finish the tally, and Martin estimates the count will reach $175,000 this year. “It definitely gives new meaning to doing the paperwork for tax season,” he said.
