WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY Ritzville

Channel 44, the local cable station, has a new program. Ritzville High School students will produce a 30-minute news program featuring reporters Kayla Katsel, David Pray, Luke Clark, Jarrod Olson and Marie Newton. The show will focus on school activities and personalities. It is funded by a WSU Cooperative Extension grant for drug- and alcohol-free activities.

FERRY COUNTY Curlew

The annual Ferry Conservation District plant sale will be Friday and Saturday at Curlew Lake State Park. The sale runs in conjunction with Saturday’s Spring Conservation Fair and Drug-Free Learning Fair featuring classes on composting, recycling, weed control, orchard bees, woodlot management, bluebird nesting and making potting soil.

GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake

The Department of Social and Health Services recently fined Sunrise Care and Rehab of Moses Lake nursing home $2,000. The fine came after a complaint about the treatment of residents. Sunrise Care and Rehab is a 111-bed nursing home serving both private and Medicare/Medicaid patients.

LINCOLN COUNTY Davenport

The city of Davenport is sponsoring a spring cleanup with three free dump days. The municipal dump will accept yard waste, tree trimmings, shrubs and clippings without charge Saturday and April 21.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

What do fresh carrots and Y2K have in common? They’re the subject of the annual spring gardening forum Saturday. “Gardening for Y2K and Other Blips in Everyday Civilization” will be presented by Gerri Weythan of Betterridge Farm in Valley, Wash. The forum starts at 9 a.m. at Newport United Church of Christ. A sack lunch is recommended and registration fee is $7.

SPOKANE COUNTY Medical Lake

Medical Lake Middle School student Brandon Vasquez has qualified for the state geography bee, to be held in Tacoma. Vasquez is the first Medical Lake middle-schooler to qualify in five years.

STEVENS COUNTY Colville

Emily Maruji was recently crowned Colville’s Junior Miss. Not only did she capture the title, but she took top honors in the judge’s interview and presence and composure categories. She and runners-up Angie Dau and Rachael Killings will ride the community float at regional parades throughout the spring and summer.

WHITMAN COUNTY St. John

The St. John-Endicott Community float will be graced by Junior Miss Kim Colyar and her two princesses. Colyar, who also won the Scholastic Achievement award at the recent Junior Miss pageant, is the daughter of Skip and Carrie Colyar of St. John. Runners-up are Desiree Zunger and Amy Bass.

IDAHO

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

Lakeside Middle School has received a $2,500 grant to develop a school video annual. The Idaho Department of Vocational Education grant will be used to buy a digital video camera and the necessary software.

BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint

Traffic will be delayed throughout the week on Dufort Road during roadwork by the Bonner County Road Department. The work will be on the west end of Dufort from Hayden Ranch to the bridge. Flaggers will be on site, with 15 to 30 minutes delays expected. For information, call the Road Department at (208) 264-1497.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

Registration for artists interested in a five-day workshop with artist Zoltan Szabo will run through May 15. The workshop will be at the Kootenai River Inn from June 14-18. KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene

The North Idaho Child Care Training Project will host “Art, Art and More Art,” a workshop for care-givers, parents and teachers, at the Harding Family Center on Saturday. Sessions will focus on adaptations for both home-based and center-based child care settings, as well as age-appropriate activities for all children. LATAH COUNTY Moscow

The Palouse Habitat for Humanity spring home tour will be Saturday. The tour will feature six interesting and original homes in Moscow and Pullman. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $25 for families. Proceeds will be used to build a new Habitat home. The building site for the new home also is on the tour.

SHOSHONE COUNTY Pinehurst

Official groundbreaking on the Pinehurst skate park was April 9. The Pinehurst Community Policing Program has been working with teenagers and community members for two years to develop a park for young people to skateboard, in-line skate and ride bicycles. The City Council has allocated about $25,000 to get the project started. Bidding for the construction phase of the project will take place in the next couple of weeks.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby

Montana Congressman Rick Hill conducted an electronic town meeting in Libby on April 6. The meeting was broadcast on KCLB radio. Hill discussed the situation in Kosovo and said he shares the view of Montana residents who have contacted him in opposition to the growing possibility of sending ground troops to Kosovo.
