Wells Leads Idaho

With three of the top five scorers, led by medalist Julie Wells, the University of Idaho won its own Vandal Spring Invitational women’s golf tournament that wound up a 54-hole run Monday on the UI Golf Course.

Wells, a freshman, led the individual scoring for a second straight tournament, this time with a 12-overpar 228. Teammate Sara Thompson was third at 234 behind Boise State’s Jamie Jou’s 231 and the Vandals’ Elizabeth Carter shared fourth with Eastern Washington’s Kylie Smith at 235. Smith was low scorer Monday with a 5-over 77.

Idaho had a three-day total of 943 for a 10-stroke victory over Boise State with EWU third at 976 in the nine-school field.

Eastern had a second player in the top seven, Brenda Hall, who shot a 240.

Gonzaga, which finished sixth at 1,006, was led by Molly McDonald, who tied for 15th at 247.
