Adams County

Othello

Out of 40 teams, the two groups of Othello Huskies placed fifth and sixth at the recent “Math is Cool” competition in Spokane. The team was led by Adam Hill, who snagged second-place overall individual honors. Sam Scorup’s 11th-place finish was also a big boost to the team’s overall rating.

Ferry County

Republic

Noxious weeds have a new enemy in Ferry County - the helicopter. Helicopter spraying of weeds is available to local landowners. The cost is $11 per acre prepaid and $13 per acre billed. The minimum control site is 15 acres, but the Noxious Weed Board says neighbors can band together to meet that requirement. To sign up, call (509) 775-5210.

Royal City

Lacie Jensen has been named Royal City’s Junior Miss. She will represent the area on the community float. Also riding the float will be runners-up Emily Lang, Cynthia Bustillos and Christine Freeman.

Lincoln County

Davenport

With its transfer station online, Lincoln County has decided to build a recycling center as well. The county will process, bale and store recyclables until the market is right, something it cannot do with its current program of hauling bins to Spokane weekly for disposal. Land already has been purchased for the center.

Pend Oreille County

Cusick

Daniel Robinson has been chosen as a finalist in the 1999 National Merit Scholarship Program. Robinson joins less than 1 percent of American high school seniors receiving the distinction. This makes him eligible for one of 2,400 scholarships worth $2,000. Robinson plans to attend Washington State University in the fall.

Spokane

The North Central COPS substation, Mother’s Against Sexual Abuse and the Spokane Sexual Assault Center are sponsoring an event today to call attention to child abuse. Shannon Zetah, director of ACT for Kids, will speak at 7 p.m. at Garfield Elementary School at 222 W. Knox.

Also today, Spokane COPS resource officers Bonnie Sherar and Duane Wilmschen will have their monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Nevawood COPS substation, 4705 N. Addison, to discuss safety issues with apartment complex managers and landlords.

Stevens County

Meyers Falls

Avista Corp. has sold its smallest and oldest hydropower plant. The 1.2-megawatt Meyers Falls Hydroelectric Facility on the Colville River, circa 1903, has been sold to Chattaroy’s Hydro Technology Systems. Meyers Falls creates enough electricity to power 575 houses.

Whitman County

Pullman

Salmon recovery issues and the four lower Snake River dams will be the topic of a panel discussion tonight from 8 to 9 p.m. at KWSU-TV. It will be broadcast live on KWSU-TV, channel 10 in Pullman, and KTNW-TV, channel 10/31 in the Tri-Cities.

A panel of experts will discuss the issues surrounding preserving Northwest salmon and the operation of federal dams. The public is invited to attend and ask questions. The studio is on the WSU campus in the Murrow Communications Building on the first floor.

St. Maries

The St. Joe Medicine Show will present the second annual melodrama May 14-16. Five performances of the “Great Ice Scheme or Robin Baskins to the Rescue” will begin at 8 p.m. each night with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Advance tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children. All proceeds benefit BetterCare.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

Bonner County commissioners have adopted a resolution prohibiting the use of oil to control dust on county roads. The action leaves magnesium chloride, calcium chloride or other approved water soluble products as the only accepted materials for dust control. The resolution was adopted because of environmental and road maintenance concerns. The resolution does not apply to private roads.

Bonners Ferry

Youth volunteers are being sought to help with Youth Service Day at the Bonners Ferry Ranger District. Volunteers will begin restoration and clean up a number of low-elevation lakes around the county. For information, call Jennifer Downing at (208) 267-7962.

The Injury Prevention Coalition of Kootenai County is conducting a class on car seat installation at 6 p.m. Friday. The class will be at Knudtsen Chevrolet, 1710 N 4th St. To register, call (208) 664-8107. Trained technicians also will check car seats for proper installation 10 a.m. Saturday at Knudtsen Chevrolet.

Moscow

Moscow city officials are looking to get involved with plans for a corridor between Moscow and Pullman. Moscow officials are calling for a regional meeting of government officials to discuss goals and values to be considered as development standards for the goal. The plan being considered by Whitman County is a reincarnation of similar proposals rejected by county commissioners in 1988 and 1995.

Shoshone County

Wallace

Wallace voters will go to the polls April 20 to decide a $1.1 million levy to help maintain programs and sustain class sizes in the elementary, middle and high schools. Polls will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Applications for absentee ballots are available from the district clerk. Libby Families in Partnership was one of eight Montana programs and organizations honored by the Governor’s Council on Families April 9 in Helena. Gov. Marc Racicot and Council Chairwoman Katherine Curtis of Columbia Falls presented program representatives with “Family Friendly” certificates of appreciation. Jennifer Koehler represented Families in Partnership.
