Science Olympiad Set For Ewu

Plastic bottle rockets will fly over Cheney on Saturday as the State Science Olympiad opens at Eastern Washington University.

The all-day competition is expected to attract more than 1,000 high school and middle school students and teachers to the campus.

Ferris High School, Gonzaga Prep and Chase Middle School will compete against 42 other teams from across the state. The teams will conduct a variety of problem-solving exercises and experiments, including egg bungee jumping, forensic science crime solving and launching pressurized, two-liter soda bottles.

Winning teams may enter the National Olympiad on May 14-15 in Chicago.

Saturday’s competition, which is sponsored by Alcoa Foundation, Northwest Alloys and the Boeing Co., is free and open to the public. Visitors should check in at the EWU Science Building for schedules and locations of events.
