Ritzville
Now’s the time for spring cleanup, as the city is willing to foot the bill. Ritzville residents will be allowed to dump yard waste in designated bins free of charge through May 2. Dumpsters are located behind the city shop. If the Dumpster is full, residents are asked to not pile the debris on the ground, but wait until the Dumpsters are emptied on Mondays and Thursdays.
FERRY COUNTY
Curlew
The local school district will put a special levy to the voters May 18. The levy will ask for $80,000 in each of the years 2000 and 2001. Taxpayers would be billed $1.22 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The district has declared a state of financial emergency as student numbers have been falling, and with them, state funds.
GRANT COUNTY
Moses Lake
The City Council has been discussing the annexation of the Wheeler Road area. The city and county are at odds over the area, which is turning into an industrial corridor. The county says Moses Lake has violated an agreement by trying to annex the area. Public hearings will begin later this month.
LINCOLN COUNTY
Odessa
The local parade float will be graced by 1999 Junior Miss Hope Gallagher. Gallagher was chosen to represent this community of 1,000 residents at a recent pageant. Serving as runners-up are Sindy Anderson, Lauri Kloberdanz and Kara Weisser. Gallagher wowed the judges by playing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on her violin.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY
Newport
Rehearsals are under way for Newport High’s upcoming play. Students will present “Little Women” on April 26 and 28 and May 1. Key players are Chelsea Linquest, Amber Shaeffer, Alicia Wright, Danae Fitzgibbons and Lindsey Westford. Mark Dwell will direct.

The Cheney Parks and Recreation Department is looking for umpires and coaches for softball, baseball and T-ball leagues. Practices start June 1 and 7. Applications may be picked up at the parks office, 520 Fourth St., or call 235-7295 for more information.

Rep. Cathy McMorris, R-Colville, recently surveyed constituents about their top concerns as taxpayers. Respondents felt the top legislative issues should be the economy and jobs. Other top issues included spending, health care and education.

Jessica Heilsberg has been named Colfax Junior Miss. She won the talent and presence and composure categories at a recent pageant. She will ride the community float along with runners-up Tiffany Ludka and Carrie Pauls.

BENEWAH COUNTY
St. Maries
Valdasue Steele has been hired as a Benewah County University of Idaho extension agent. She earned a master’s degree in agronomy at New Mexico State University and supervised the 4-H program in Yavapai County for four years. Steele replaced Gene Gibson, who accepted a job in Sandpoint last year.

Sandpoint
Construction of the Sandpoint Library has sparked the interest of 58 Northwest contractors. The East Bonner County Library District has spent $18,900 for architectural plans. The bid deadline is Wednesday and it will be awarded within the next couple of weeks. Groundbreaking for the Sandpoint Library will be at 2 p.m. April 25.

Bonners Ferry

Coeur d’Alene
The Idaho Department of Lands and the U.S. Forest Service are sponsoring a wildfire workshop Sunday and Monday at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. The free workshop will include information on Idaho fire history and ecology and responsibilities of wildland agencies, fire departments and homeowners. Troy
The Troy Players are performing “The Glass Menagerie” nightly through April 24. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Main Street Pizza Theatre. An April 25 matinee will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. The play is directed by former Troy Player Chrisstina Hamilton.
SHOSHONE COUNTY
Kellogg
The Environmental Protection Agency and Panhandle Health District are placing signs at publicly used places along the Coeur d’Alene River to warn of possible contamination danger. The signs will warn people to eat on picnic tables and not on blankets on the ground, not to take soil home and not to allow children to play in the dirt. Last year, the EPA took 47 soil samples along the river and 32 of the sites were found to need some form of remediation work.
MONTANA
LINCOLN COUNTY
Libby
An 18-year-old Libby man has been sentenced to spend the next 15 weekends in jail for assaulting a man last spring at an underage drinking party. Bryce Hilliard was sentenced to six months in jail with all but 30 days suspended. Hilliard will serve his sentence on weekends to allow him to continue his employment for a local logging outfit. He was ordered to pay a $500 fine and $528 restitution to the victim.
