Dvd Versatility Helps New Format Begin To Attract A Loyal Following

Although it got off to a slow start, digital versatile disc technology, commonly known as DVD, is gaining a following.

The attraction: DVD discs, similar in size to a common CD, can hold up to 17 gigabytes of data.

A single disc can easily hold a feature-length movie, plus extras such as subtitles in several languages, background information and even two versions of the same movie that differ in rating or format.

Hollywood is hooked on the concept, and DVD sales trends suggest the electronics industry has another winner on its hands.

Now, desktop video is carving a niche for itself.

Anyone with a yearning to become the next Steven Spielberg can now turn out a short film. Using a video camera, a home computer and a few pieces of specialized hardware and software, would-be filmmakers can produce quality viewing material.

Recent technological advances and lower prices are opening doors for amateurs and professionals.
