New Fee At Scc To Pay For Computer Upgrades

From Staff Reports

The Community Colleges of Spokane on Tuesday approved a $30 technology fee for each student at two campuses where computers and software will be upgraded.

The fee will be charged beginning this fall at Spokane Community College and at the Institute for Extended Learning. Spokane Falls Community College students have rejected the fee and will not be charged.

The CCS board of trustees approved the technology fee after administrators and students explained that the state has failed to spend the money necessary to keep pace with rapidly changing technology.

The schools will assess students $3 per credit up to $30 per quarter. The board will vote in May on how the money will be used, but preliminary plans call for improvements to computers used for instruction in classrooms and laboratories.
