More computer enthusiasts are discovering the thrill, and the challenge, of building their own PCs.

Do-it-yourselfers can customize equipment to suit their particular needs, but shouldn’t expect to save a lot of money.

And they should be prepared for some hitches.

Virtual advertising: Computer tricks have opened up a potentially lucrative new opportunity for advertisers.

“Virtual” ads are beginning to show up on sporting telecasts and could soon spread to other TV venues.

Through the magic of electronics, advertisements are pasted onto broadcast images, giving viewers the impression that a particular product is present in a scene when it actually wasn’t.

Fast forward: There’s nothing as certain as change in the computer business, and PCs that will be on shelves in 2001 are taking shape today.

Experts say future computers are likely to be better, faster, smaller and cheaper.

And those changes should bring about a host of enhancements, such as better voice recognition and easier online shopping.
