Most Posts In Five Counties Draw Candidates

Two Colville city councilmen, Bob Anderson and Dick Nichols, want to replace retiring Mayor Duane Scott, but two of the city’s council positions went begging in election filings this week.

There was no shortage of candidates in tiny Springdale at the other end of Stevens County. Two of four council positions up for election in Springdale have three candidates each, and there are two candidates for both of the other positions.

More than 150 people filed for open positions in Whitman County, including posts on the Pullman and Colfax city councils.

Most municipal positions in Whitman, Lincoln, Pend Oreille and Ferry counties drew at least one candidate, but there are no candidates for a number of school, fire, hospital, cemetery and utility districts.

Special three-day filing periods are planned to give residents one more chance at the positions that have no candidates. The filing periods will be Wednesday through Friday this week in Stevens County and Aug. 9-11 in Lincoln, Pend Oreille and Ferry counties. Dates for Whitman County weren’t available.
