Sonics Line Up Clippers

The Seattle Supersonics will play their first National Basketball Association exhibition game in Spokane in three years, Oct. 24 at the Arena against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Tickets for the 3 p.m. game will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at all G&B Select-a-Seat locations. The tickets, ranging from $19.50 to $50, are also available at 325-SEAT, 1-800-325-SEAT, or on the Internet at www.TicketsWest.com.

The Sonics didn’t play in Spokane last season because of the NBA lockout. The previous year, the Portland Trail Blazers played the Golden State Warriors in the Arena.

This will be the 16th season of NBA exhibitions in Spokane.

Golf

Reid Hatley of Manito Golf and Country Club finished in a three-way tie for sixth place Saturday at the Washington State Golf Association men’s amateur championship at Tacoma.

Hatley, bound for the University of Arizona, shot a 1-over-par 72 at Fort Lewis Golf Course to finish four days at 1-over 285.

Ryan Lavoie of Pasco shot a final-round 68 to finish at 274, three strokes ahead of Troy Kelly of Bremerton. Lavoie plays for the University of Oregon.

Keith Coleman of Mukilteo, who led the firstthree days, skied to a 76 and finished fourth, at 280.

Ritzville’s Ryan Benzel carded a 70 to finish tied for 13th at 292 with ex-Mead golfer Darren Slackman, the tourney’s 1996 champion.

American Legion baseball

Adam Stultz pitched all 11 innings as the Cannons defeated the North Stars 6-4 at Jackson Field for seeding to next week’s eight-team Senior state tournament in Spokane.

Chris Hilsabeck’s three-run double in the ninth for the Cannons forced extra innings.

The Cannons will open state play at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson against the Division I champions. The North Stars, regular season champs, open at about noon against the Division VI (Tri-Cities area) champs.

Running

Spokane’s Kim Jones finished second in the masters women’s race at the Quad-City Times Bix 7-miler in Davenport, Iowa.

Jones, 41, finished in 41 minutes, 54 seconds. Joan Benoit Samuelson, 42, of Freeport, Maine, successfully defended her title in 40:17.

Overall winners were John Korir of Kenya, in 32:59 in the men’s race, and countrywoman Catherine Ndereba (37:30) in the women’s race.

Women’s basketball

Carrie Waddell has signed an institutional letter of intent to transfer from Eastern Washington University to Central Washington.

Waddell, a junior, started in 27 of her 47 games with the Eagles. She averaged 2.2 assists per game during her freshman season, when she started 21 times.

Waddell averaged 9.8 assists per game during her senior year at Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) High.

Girls soccer

Abbie Socha scored a header goal off a pass from Ferris High teammate Courtney Knox, giving the U17 Spokane Skyhawks a 1-0 win over Tynecastle LFC at the Edinburgh Cup in Scotland.

Mead’s Janie Strait had the shutout in the evening match. In the afternoon, Cumbernauld LFC of Glasgow defeated Spokane 3-0.

The Skyhawks and Hearts LFC of Edinburgh tied at 1 on Friday. Spokane’s Laura Oliva, of Gonzaga Prep, scored after a pass from her sister, Cristina.

Coaching changes

St. George’s has hired former Ritzville athletic standout Darcy Wellsandt as its new volleyball coach.

Wellsandt, who recently played in Europe, is working toward a teaching degree at Whitworth. She replaces Jenny Houck, who left to study physical therapy at EWU.

St. George’s also hired Toraj Farzana as its boys soccer coach. Farzana replaces Yosef Afenegus, who will coach boys and girls while student teaching at Lakeside.
