Not Corny, Just Doggone Good Trick
Do you know which CdA business has the best corn dog? Shields produce at Third and Linden. No, I’m not talking about that kind of corn dog. I’m talking about Bob, a 7-year-old, 75-pound basset who samples each new batch of corn owners Jim and Lu Dixon get in. First, Bob’ll shuck an ear. Then, holding it delicately between his paws, Bob stretches out on his belly and eats, one row at a time, until every kernel is gone. Bob’s so persnickety that he once turned his muzzle up at a substandard ear. In fact, such is his reputation that one Careywood customer won’t buy any corn that doesn’t have Bob’s seal of approval.
In the doghouse
Speaking of dogs, Suzanne Robertson of Hayden Lake, the 50something owner of Suzi’s Dog House, attracted smiles with her Teehee-shirt Friday. It featured a dog’s skeleton beneath the message: “In dog year’s I’m dead” … If talking on a cell phone while you drive is hazardous to your health, how about blabbing on a phone and biking? Marge Winderman saw Mr. Future Brain Injury yakking away as he peddled lickety split down Third - sans helmet, of course … Then, there’s the one about the Mullan woman who set off the Shoshone County Courthouse metal detector. According to the Idaho News Observer, she was a defense witness in a drug case - until a deputy checked her purse and found marijuana. Not much. But enough to send her to the crossbar hotel for possession. And stupidity?
Soar like an eagle
The Coeur d’Alene Indian Tribe could teach Hollyweird something about special effects. As a runner bearing a staff of eagle feathers was about to lead the grand entrance at the Julyamsh powwow, a bald eagle upstaged him by soaring in lazy circles in the sky above. Eat your heart out, George Lucas.
Grounded
Good thing the CdA Chamber didn’t need its arm twisters to work on the Idaho Travel Council July 22. They were grounded - Jerry Jaeger, Rob Elder, Sandi Bloem, et al. Seems their charter jet experienced mechanical problems and couldn’t fly. The same can be said of rival CdA/Post Falls Visitors & Convention Bureau, now that it’s lost the local tourism tug-of-war and a $178,000 grant to the CdA Chamber … Weed specialists have their own sense of humor. During introductions at a seminar, one guy deadpanned: “I’m Glen Secrist with the Idaho Department of Agriculture, and hawkweed has ruined my life” … Later, the weed’s ability to spread quickly prompted another to say: “They’re into weird sex.” Onward.
Huckleberries
I can’t picture the Apostle Paul driving around in a mauve Ford Aspire with this vanity plate: “FNKYREV.” So that must have been someone else I saw July 18 at Government Way & Harrison … Because You Asked: The state eco-police have no record of a sewer pipe bursting at The Coeur d’Alene Resort. If you saw toilet paper and worse floating on the lake, it was put there by a nitwit emptying his boat’s septic tank … Yeah, that was Jeff Smith of Fins & Feathers Tackle Shop showing host Bobby Forster where the Lake Coeur d’Alene pike were for “America’s Outdoor Journal” July 26. It was nice to see TV footage of the area with something other than racists in the foreground. And to hear men giggle … Sandpoint Mayor David Sawyer’s wondering what he should do for a living after he leaves office. Any suggestions? … Nah, the Davis Donuts philosopher doesn’t run in Aryan circles, as some of you think. He’s just a little out there - as was his latest readerboard fare: “Treason governs America.”
Parting shot
So, what was Mistermayor Steve Judy doing July 10 while the Aryans marched on Sherman and GQov. Dirk Kempthorne, his former boss, lectured on human rights at North Idaho College? Golfing, of course. As Martin Luther King Jr. used to say, and I paraphrase: You don’t stand for freedom. For freedom, you sit in jail. Or in the young mayor’s case you try to save par.
