With summer a prime time for accidents, Adams County residents are reminded that 911 calls from cell phones are not routed directly to Ritzville. Sue Gardner, editor of the Adams County Journal, reminds all that emergency cell phone calls go to Wenatchee, where they are then routed back to the county of origin, which takes precious minutes. It’s no small undertaking to paint “TIGERS” on the hill above the Republic High School football field. Terri Marikis decided the local landmark was fading and needed a fresh coat of paint. She was joined by seven other local women and their daughters.

Local business owners jammed the community hall earlier this week to give Universal Concerts an earful. Saying oversold concerts hurt business, local growers and merchants have complained to Gorge Amphitheater management that traffic problems and trespassing by concertgoers is becoming more of a problem. The angry locals say this one large business should not inhibit other businesses from running smoothly.

The Lincoln County Fair Board is all smiles. The group recently learned state funding for the annual event is good for three years. Lawmakers recently set aside $6 million to help fund rural county and community fairs. Lincoln County’s share of this is $27,166. Nearly $190,000 of the money set aside by the state will go to northeastern Washington counties.

Hurting folks come from around the country for healing at the local Healing Arts Center. The center recently celebrated its first anniversary and recognized its tremendous growth. When the doors opened last year, there were 16 staff members. Today there are 31 doling out a variety of nonintrusive therapies and alternative medical approaches.

Parking rates at Washington State University are slated to increase on Monday to help pay for construction at a new covered parking area.

Rates for daily, hourly and metered parking will increase. The cost of employee and student parking permits won’t increase this year. The new parking rates are expected to generate $200,000 in revenues annually. The new parking center should offer more than 200 new spaces once complete.

Bonners Ferry

One hundred blocks have been created for the centennial quilt project by local quilters. The finished quilt will be unveiled at the Bonners Ferry centennial celebration Saturday. Raffle tickets will be sold for $25 each to benefit the Boundary County Mental Health Volunteers. The drawing will be at the Boundary County Fair.

Paradise Farm Organics of Moscow has won the 1999 Founders of New Northwest award. The award was established in 1995 to identify, recognize, document and publicize sustainability efforts in the Northwest. Paradise Farms is a farm and food manufacturing company that runs a mail-order produce business, manufactures Eco-Cuisine backpacking foods and runs Paydirt, an organic farming and marketing apprentice school.

Shoshone Medical Center is planning its third annual Charity Golf Classic for Sept. 18 at the Shoshone Golf Club. Proceeds will be used to promote quality health care in the Silver Valley. Troy

Cyprus Amax and Asarco, a company with a dormant mine near Troy, have agreed to merge. The agreement is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 1999. It still requires approval from both companies’ shareholders and the federal Securities and Exchange Commission. If approved, the merger would not affect Asarco’s Troy Mine or the proposed Rock Creek Mine.
