Idaho State Police are investigating the death of a Coeur d’Alene man whose body was lying in a roadway early Thursday and was struck by a car driven by a teenager.

Police do not yet know if Robert N. Kelley, 42, was dead before he was hit. The 17-year-old Post Falls resident immediately reported the incident to Post Falls Police.

At about 1 a.m. Thursday, the teenager was driving westbound on Harbor Island Road toward Post Falls. The teen, driving a 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit, was entering a right-hand curve after a small stretch of straightaway and was unable to avoid hitting Kelley’s body lying in the westbound lane.

Police said evidence indicated Kelley had not been struck by another vehicle earlier. The possibility, however, was still being investigated, police said.

There was no sign of a vehicle that might have belonged to Kelley, police said.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning.
