WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Representatives of two cultures will meet for better understanding today at the first-ever Fiesta Amistad. The fiesta is a time for Hispanic and Caucasian Cultures in the Columbia Basin to come together. The focus will be on community leadership. Music, food and art exhibits are planned.

Ferry County Republic

With the Suicide Race canceled from this year’s Omak Stampede, Michelle Graham, editor of the Republic News-Miner, has suggested that another location be found for the race.

Grant County Moses Lake

Residents are complaining about contamination in the Skyline Water System. Their options include hooking up to the city of Moses Lake’s water system, or installing a filtration system.

Lincoln County Davenport

Governor Gary Locke will host a coffee hour at the Cottonwood Inn at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. He is expected to field questions from citizens about a variety of topics. Afterward, Locke will tour the courthouse, recently restored after a 1995 fire.

Pend Oreille County Usk

It’s time again for the Kalispel Pow-Wow with Native American dancing and drumming, stick games, concessions and arts and crafts today and Sunday. A buffalo barbecue is set for noon and costs $2.50 per plate. The public is welcome.

Spokane

The Manito Presbyterian Church’s weeklong vacation bible camp opens at 9 a.m. Monday under a tent on school grounds next door. The free camp is expecting about 700 children, too many to fit inside the church sanctuary, the pastor said.

Stevens County Colville

Arts and crafts booths will grace the city park for the annual Rendezvous today. The Hoop d’Gras 3-on-3 basketball tournament will sport more than 130 teams, and there will also be a Little League All-Star game.

Whitman County Colfax

The Palouse Empire Fair Foundation did not receive the Paul Allen Foundation grant. The $875,000 grant for a new grandstand was denied. Fair supporters have been looking to replace the aging bleachers for 10 years, and sufficient community financial support is still a long way away.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

The dental office of Dr. Larry Schrader has moved to a new location at 1722 Main Ave. Cathy Nelson recently joined the staff as a dental assistant. She previously worked at St. Mares Family Medicine as a receptionist for more than nine years.

Bonner County Sandpoint

An account has been established for Stephanie Martin of Sagle, who was seriously injured last week in a horse riding accident. Martin, 18, was riding last Tuesday in the Careywood area when the incident occurred. She was airlifted to Kootenai Medical Center where she remains in serious condition. Friends of Martin’s family have established a benefit account at Panhandle State Bank. Donations can be sent to the bank at 231 N. Third Ave., Sandpoint, ID 83864.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

One hundred blocks have been created for the Centennial Quilt Project by local quilters. The finished quilt will be unveiled at the Bonners Ferry Centennial Celebration Saturday. Raffle tickets will be sold for $25 each to benefit the Boundary County Mental Health Volunteers. The drawing will be at the Boundary County Fair.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The City of Coeur d’Alene’s Wastewater Division will begin the $230,000 construction of a new sewer line on 15th Street Monday. Construction will extend north from Lunceford Lane to Shadduck Lane. Detours around the construction zone will be clearly marked, but traffic delays are expected. Homes east of 15th currently using septic tanks will have the opportunity to connect with the new sewer line once the project is complete.

Latah County Moscow

Friends of the Clearwater, a Moscow-based conservation organization, has hired its first full-time employee. Kristin Ruether, a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in biochemistry, will serve as the group’s full time forest watch coordinator. The forest watch coordinator is a watchdog position designed to assure that the U.S. Forest Service is working in compliance with the nation’s environmental laws. Friends of the Clearwater, a non-profit organization incorporated in 1995, appeals timber sales, monitors road building projects and conducts other conservation work on behalf of the national forests and public lands in the Clearwater Basin of central Idaho.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Canada track and field coach Brent McFarlane will be in Kellogg next week as part of a training clinic for Silver Valley youth. The national hurdle coach will also speak at the Silver Valley Kiwanis luncheon Tuesday. The club meets at noon at the Broken Wheel Restaurant in Kellogg.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

The Independent Forest Products Association has predicted a $1.2 million drop this year in Lincoln County’s share of forest receipts. Representatives of the association presented commissioners with figures based on actual timber harvest to date and projection through the end of the fiscal year Sept. 30. The representatives project Lincoln County’s share at $2.4 million, compared to $3.6 million last year. Under federal law, 25 percent of receipts from national forests go to counties for roads and schools. Montana gives two-thirds of that money to roads and one-third to schools.
