Yager Sentencing Expected For August

From Staff Reports

Scott Yager will be sentenced Aug. 16 for killing Idaho State Police Trooper Linda Huff in June 1998.

First District Court Judge James Judd will reveal at 9 a.m. whether Yager will be sentenced to death, as the Kootenai County prosecutor has requested, or to life in prison, as the county’s public defender has asked.

Jurors convicted Yager, 35, in February of first-degree murder of a police officer and committing a felony with a deadly weapon. Yager fired at Huff 17 times with a 9 mm handgun and was shot twice when the officer returned fire.

Prosecutor Bill Douglas said Yager showed reckless disregard for human life, committed a heinous crime and killed a police officer in the line of duty, all of which justifies the death penalty.

Public Defender John Adams has argued that a death sentence would diminish the life of an officer who people remember as merciful.
