Adams County Othello
Othello will be home to a new Boys & Girls Club. Already working in Moses Lake to drop youth crime by 47 percent, the club is “a natural fit for Othello,” says director Ryan Graves. Graves says the community is in need of an after-school program for kids. Alcohol- and drug-related arrests in the area for kids ages 10 to 14 is four times that of the rest of the state. Graves plans to get programs running by Sept. 13.
Ferry County Republic
The last race of the season at Eagle Track Raceway was a roaring success. More than 300 spectators watched Creston’s Michelle Rosman take the Trophy Dash and the Main Event trophies. Cheyne Odenrider of Wilbur won the Heat Race and took second to Rosman in the Main Event. Twenty-four racers were registered for the event, which included full bodies and modified rigs.
Grant County Moses Lake
Residents here may get a touch of Europe in the Columbia Basin. Planning the new Yonezawa Boulevard, the city is considering ditching the traditional four-way stop with lights for a more aesthetically pleasing European-style “roundabout.” Yonezawa Boulevard, named for sister city Yonezawa, Japan, will run 2.5 miles between Division Street and Highway 17.
Lincoln County Davenport
A reminder to Lincoln County residents that Gov. Gary Locke is in Davenport today. The governor is expected to discuss topics from water, dam breaching and agriculture to the vehicle excise tax. He will meet with citizens at 2:15 p.m. at the Cottonwood Inn, just north of Highway 2 in Davenport.
Pend Oreille County Newport
There is now a daily shuttle to take Pend Oreille County residents to Spokane. The shuttle began July 26. Special Mobility Services offers the shuttle, which is the first daily scheduled transportation to Spokane in more than 10 years. The trip is $3 one-way and reservations must be made at 1-877-264-7433.
Spokane County Spokane
Inmate workers from Geiger Corrections Center recently pruned vegetation along Division Street at Interstate 90. Inmates also will be put to work clearing dead and dying trees from Hamblen Park, brush from the Centennial Trail and other projects.
Stevens County Colville
Summer often brings more juvenile crime, but local police are ready. Bike patrols are back on Colville streets and officers find them a good preventative crime tool. Officer Ron Maxey and reserve officer Mike Swim find that building relationships with local youth deters crime.
Whitman County Pullman
Samuel L. Kindred, a retired general who is vice president of business affairs at Washington State University, announced recently his plans to step down from his WSU leadership position.
Kindred came to WSU after retiring as brigadier general and deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command. He told WSU officials he plans to explore other professional opportunities.
