An archive containing handwritten works by Johann Sebastian Bach remained virtually untouched for 55 years before Christoph Wolff, a Harvard music professor, found the more than 5,000 items in Ukraine’s Central Archive in Kiev. Many Western Bach scholars believed they had been destroyed or forgotten since the end of World War II. The materials were brought to the Kiev Music Conservatory in 1945 after a Soviet Army unit discovered the archive in a pile of debris in war-devastated Berlin at the end of World War II. “A thorough research is needed to determine if these are original works or copies,” said Ruslan Pyrih, who heads the government-run agency overseeing the former Soviet republic’s archives.
