Gps Bug Imminent

Routefinding

Most people have heard of the Y2K problem that threatens to shut down computers that haven’t been updated to recognize the year 2000.

But have you heard of the EOW rollover that could cause Global Positioning System units to give inaccurate readings unless the units are EOW compliant?

Don’t procrastinate. The EOW rollover occurs next Sunday, and is of particular concern to people with units built before 1994.

EOW means “end-of-week” a term given to the satellite calendar adjustments that are made every 1,024 weeks-roughly every 20 years.

People with newer units can minimize the chance of problems by keeping their receivers off on Aug. 22 from 4-6 p.m., when the rollover is scheduled.

Check with receiver manufacturers to find out if receivers and applications are EOW compliant.

While you’re at it, you might ask if the unit is Y2K compliant, too.

For manufacturer contact information, call the Y2K consumer hotline at (888) 872-4925. For info on EOW, check the Coast Guard’s Web site at www.navcen.uscg.mil/ gps/geninfo/y2k/default.htm.
