WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

The county courthouse is now more accessible to handicapped people. Commissioners approved the installation of power doors that can be opened by pushing a button, and the elevators are close by for access to upper floors. The doors are on the west end of the building.

Ferry County Republic

County commissioners figure the county would lose $718,000 annually if Initiative 695 passes and auto license fees are dropped to a flat $30. The road department would be out an additional $116,000, commissioners said.

Grant County Moses Lake

The city needs to annex the Wheeler Corridor, City Manager Joe Gavinski says. “The city can’t thrive or survive at its current level of services without these industrial properties,” he said in response to a petition against the annexation. The majority of industry owners in the Wheeler Corridor have agreed to the annexation.

Lincoln County Davenport

Tom Martin just couldn’t stay away from Lincoln Hospital. Martin, who had been administrator of the public district for 11 years, moved on to Spokane nearly two years ago. This week, Lincoln Hospital announced it has wooed him back to Davenport as of Sept. 29.

Pend Oreille County Newport

A deal is in the works between the county and Seattle City Light regarding impact payments and lost revenue from operation of Boundary Dam. The newest proposal by SCL outlines a $1.05 million payment to the county, with breakouts for schools and cities. The sum includes annual $70,000 back payments for the several years the utility did not pay during its former contract with the county.

Spokane County Deer Park

Nathan L. Leibrant, a 1998 Deer Park High School graduate, recently enlisted in the Army as a vehicle system mechanic and left for basic training in Fort Knox, Ky.

Stevens County Colville

A recent benefit for young Nicole Riley-Reedy brought in almost $3,000 for her upcoming surgery. A nearly packed house watched area dancers kick up their heels for the local girl. Riley-Reedy, 9, has a rare, life-threatening condition that keeps her rib cage from enlarging as she grows. As a result, her breathing becomes constricted, so Riley-Reedy must undergo surgery every four months for the next seven years to expand her rib cage.

Whitman County Colfax

Made in part on the Palouse, the feature-length film “The Basket” opens in Spokane on Friday. Set in 1918, “The Basket” tells the tale of a town adjusting to life after World War I. The film company North by Northwest shot several of the scenes in Whitman County, including footage in Rosalia, Latah, Lamont and Garfield.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Projects in a building plan approved by district patrons last year are nearing completion. The multi-purpose room at St. Maries Middle School is scheduled to be completed Oct. 12. The PE/athletic field at the high school will be leveled and prepared for sod by DeAtley Construction, and crews also are almost finished with the fencing project at the UpRiver School.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Three Bonner County fire districts were recently awarded grants by the Idaho Department of Lands. The Northside, Coolin-Cavanaugh Bay and Schweitzer fire districts were awarded grants. The Spirit Lake Fire District, located in Kootenai County and serving Bonner County residents, also received a grant.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Second Chance Animal Adoption volunteers are seeking foster families to temporarily take in puppies and adult dogs with special needs until permanent homes can be found. Dog food and vet care are provided. For more information, call Alice Miller at (208) 267-2023.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District has opened roads 1597 and 614A in the Elk Mountain area. The road system is scheduled to close Oct. 8, but may close ahead of schedule without advance notice. A permit is required to cut and gather firewood, and all fire safety equipment is required in the area. For more information, contact the Fernan office at (208) 769-3000.

Latah County Moscow

The Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow will show “Shakespeare in Love” Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. Pastor Dean Stewart and members of the congregation meet twice a month to watch a film and discuss its message. The film and discussion is free and open to the public.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Two new teachers have been hired by the Kellogg School District. Tracy Ketchum was hired at Sunnyside Elementary to teach third grade. Lynn Maciosek was hired as a firstgrade teacher for Pinehurst Elementary. Both worked as teaching assistants last year and have attained full certification.

Lincoln County Libby

Lincoln County Economic Development Council business counselor Renata Schroeppel has been appointed to a four-year term on the governor’s MicroBusiness Finance Advisory Council.

Schroeppel represents women and cities with a population under 15,000 in congressional District 1.
