Squirrel Causes Power Outage

A suicidal squirrel triggered a power outage Sunday in Cheney, causing 200 homes and part of Eastern Washington University to go black.

Dan Weigel, a subforeman with Cheney Light Department, said the city lost power from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. after the critter grounded out a conductor and substation.

Weigel reported no serious damage or injuries during the blackout. The squirrel, however, died instantly.
