Melinda French Gates, wife of Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates, has been appointed to the board of directors of online retailer drugstore.com. The Bellevue-based drugstore.com, which is 25 percent owned by Rite Aid Corp., sells health and beauty supplies online and offers health-related information.

United Auto Workers have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike - if contract bargaining fails - against Ford Motor Co. The UAW on Monday released the results of the strike-authorization vote, held Aug. 17, with 96.4 percent in favor of a strike. The UAW represents about 101,000 production and skilled trades workers at Ford facilities across the country. The current contracts with Ford, General Motors Corp. and the Chrysler unit of DaimlerChrysler AG expire Sept. 14.

Federal regulators have tightened the rules governing personal trading by mutual fund managers and employees, in the wake of several cases of fund managers accused of improperly enriching themselves with investors’ money. The changes adopted by the SEC give boards of directors of mutual fund companies more supervision over personal trading by managers and employees and require fuller disclosure of such trading.
