Work On Transit Stop May Begin Next Week Cheney Site Expected To Be Finished By November

Construction of a new Spokane Transit Authority bus stop in downtown Cheney is expected to begin as early as next week.

Work on the project at Highway 904 and the Cheney-Plaza Road should be finished by early November.

The work is the latest in a series of transportation improvements in Cheney this year.

The low bidder on the project was Mike Coman Construction of Spokane at $207,000. The Cheney City Council awarded the bid for the work on Tuesday.

Four bids submitted on the project were below the engineering estimate of $237,700.

“They were all under budget,” said Don MacDonald, public works director

The other bidders from Spokane were Willms Construction, $217,400; S&P Contractors, $221,400; and Western States Construction, $224,400.

The work includes construction of a bus shelter, a concrete street pad for buses, a restroom for drivers, benches, sidewalks and landscaping.

The STA superstop is being built on city-owned land that once was used for a maintenance shop. Soil contaminated from leaking underground tanks was excavated from the site earlier this year and replaced with clean fill.

A city-owned park-and-ride lot is being built adjacent to the bus stop and will have 20 parking slots.

A related project to widen and install sidewalks along Highway 904 between H and Mullenix roads has been put off until next year.

This summer the city is finishing work on the north end of Cheney to realign the intersection of Betz Road and Highway 904. That job includes wider pavement on the highway, a new railroad crossing and improvements to Betz Road.

The city is starting work on a multiyear effort to rehabilitate residential streets. This year, the work will be on Holladay Street and Walker Drive.
