WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

A boys and girls club will be taking over the location at 116 S. First, although club Director Ryan Graves says hitting the intended Sept. 13 target opening date may be tough. Meanwhile, Discount Video has been given notice that its month-to-month lease is up at the site, so the video store will have to find a new location.

Ferry County Republic

A late filing period for candidates to apply for open public offices brought in only three new candidates. Robert Zipperer and Reed Heckly applied for fire district commissioner posts, while Julie Phillips will run for Inchelium School Board. Positions still open include county parks and recreation district, Curlew Lake Sewer District, and Curlew and Inchelium water districts.

Grant County Moses Lake

Genie Industries has begun filling about 350 positions. The local Employment Securities Office has more than 1,400 applications on file for Genie jobs. The company has leased four giant hangars at the Port of Moses Lake to begin manufacturing industrial lifts.

Lincoln County Odessa

The county has nixed the city’s choice of a route for the redirection of Highway 21 through town. County Public Works Director Bob Breshears, who oversees state funding and decides which projects are eligible for money, says the new “Plan F” does not maximize the cost/benefit ratio over the long run. Breshears favors the Alder Street plan, which does not include removing the local fire station to make way for a highway.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Eastern Washington University Early Head Start and Mountain Mama’s Playcare are opening a new day-care center on Highway 2 across from Audrey’s. The program will serve children 1 month to 3 years old. Mountain Mama’s will provide day care for children not enrolled in the program. For information, call (509) 447-3108.

Spokane County Spokane

Stephanie Lynn Boorman, 15, daughter of Jerry and Sheri Boorman, has been chosen as a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Junior-Teen Pageant to be held Sept. 5-6 in Tacoma. The winner will compete in the national pageant at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Stevens County Chewelah

Folks spending time in the woods may want to attend a free workshop Saturday. “Signs Left Behind,” put on by the WSU Cooperative Extension, will focus on what animals are in the area. Landowners will learn to identify what animals are using their land, and how to manage them. The class begins at 9 a.m. in the basement of United Security Bank.

Whitman County

The Washington Department of Natural Resources is considering expanding use of the John Wayne Trail in Whitman County.

Also called the Milwaukee Road Corridor, the section of trail begins at the Columbia River and ends at the Idaho-Washington line north of Tekoa. Some of the trail, which was built on an old railroad right of way, passes through private property. It’s now open from Oct. 1 to June 15 but DNR is considering approving year-round use, at least doubling the number of users. Benewah County St. Maries

The St. Maries Church of the Nazarene will give away school clothes today during its “Back to School Clothing Giveaway.” New and slightly used clothes will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church three miles north of St. Maries. People who need the clothing but are unable to attend the back-to-school giveaway can contact the church, 245-4594.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Former Nordman resident Neil C. Sanderson, who was trapped with his dead friend for 36 hours in his pickup, was bound over Wednesday on charges he was drunk at the time of the Aug. 14 automobile crash. Maria Johnson, sister of the man killed in the wreck, testified Sanderson and her brother, Howard Johnson Jr., were drinking heavily before they left her house outside Priest River at 1 a.m. Authorities said there was no alcohol in Sanderson’s system after so much time elapsed between the time of the crash and the discovery of the wreck. Magistrate Quentin Harden found there was enough evidence to bind Sanderson over and set a Sept. 24 arraignment date in 1st District Court.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County Community Action Agency is seeking a cook and a group interested in continuing the Community Kitchen. The kitchen serves meals to seniors every Thursday. For information, call Christine at (208) 267-3663.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Office Depot will hold its sixth annual Teacher Appreciation Breakfast Saturday in Coeur d’Alene. The program is co-hosted by National PTA. Teachers who attend will receive a free gift bag from Office Depot. The Coeur d’Alene breakfast will be 9 to 11 a.m. at 131 W. Neider Ave.

Latah County Moscow

Some residents in Moscow’s eastern section will have interruptions in sewer service while portions of the city’s sewer system are prepared for future flooding. Interruptions aren’t likely to last more than 12 hours for any particular residence, according to city officials. Work starts this week on B Street, working south down Grant Street to Fifth Street. Shoshone County Kellogg

Kellogg School District has implemented a new program at Sunnyside Middle School called “First Steps.” The program deals with writing, reading, spelling and oral language.

A federal comprehensive school reform demonstration grant, which is renewable for three years, allowed the school to add the program.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Troy

Duarte Construction of Bonners Ferry has been awarded a contract by the Montana Department of Transportation to repair the Yaak Hill on U.S. Highway 2. Duarte Construction submitted a bid of $547,235 for the project. Repair work will begin this fall. The section of road began sloughing last winter, prompting an inspection by geologists and Troy School District, which runs school buses over the route.
