Improvements Help Vandals, Too

The Cougars are not the only team benefiting from the Martin Stadium renovation. The 1998 Big West champion University of Idaho will play its home games in Martin Stadium for the next four seasons.

“We’re real excited after winning our conference last season,” said Vandals Coach Chris Tormey. “We hope the fans in Pullman realize that we’re a competitive team and get behind us.”

The Vandals are hoping the change of venue allows them to qualify for Division I-A status. The team must draw an average of 17,000 fans per game one season every four years to maintain that status.

“It’s fine with me, I’m glad we can help our neighbor out in a time of need,” WSU Coach Mike Price said. “They do need us to qualify for Division I status. I like the idea of playing them again.”

Price is hoping for a repeat performance of last year’s Sept. 19 thrilling the Cougar victory over the Vandals in Martin Stadium.

The Vandals will open their season Thursday at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane. They’ll play Eastern Washington University in a nighttime game aired on Fox Sports Northwest. The Vandals will then travel to Auburn the following week before opening their home schedule against the Cougars at Martin Stadium.

For the Cougars, the head-to-head battle with the Vandals will be their first-ever road game in Martin Stadium.
