Colville’S Tactical Error Opens Door For Lakeside

The Lakeside-Colville wrestling meet for the Great Northern League title came down to the final match on Thursday.

But it was the third-to-last match that tilted the scale as visiting Lakeside won 37-33 to repeat as league champion.

Colville’s Tim Slater was leading 12-0 at 129 pounds, with Ben Dinsmore in a cradle, when the Indians’ wrestler rocked back and accidentally pinned himself with 1 second left.

Dinsmore’s victory gave the Eagles a 33-27 lead, and the final two matches went as expected. Colville’s Jason Divis had a pin at 135 and Lakeside’s Adam Christen scored a 14-4 major decision at 141.

In top matches, Colville’s John Slater (115) defeated Justin Belyea 4-2 with a second-round reversal, and Lakeside’s Adrian Laughery (178) had an 11-3 major decision over John Larson, who had been unbeaten in league.

Elsewhere in the GNL, Aaron Gomez, trailing Brian Balfour 8-2 after two rounds at 129, registered one of Medical Lake’s two pins during a 57-13 win over visiting Deer Park (2-5).

Pins by Greg Petropolus (215) and Cliff Hostutler (275) completed Riverside’s 49-20 rally over visiting Chewelah (1-6). Chewelah led 17-0 but had to give up five forfeits to the Rams (4-3).
