The City Council approved a request by the Nestle potato processing plant to temporarily use the city right-of-way. This will allow a Nestle boiler to be installed near the street until maintenance work inside the building is finished. Concrete traffic barriers, fencing and lights will keep traffic away from the new boiler.
FERRY COUNTY
Republic
Needing to raise $16,000 quickly to finish the library addition, Friends of the Republic Library will hold its annual art auction Feb. 28. The group hopes to raise $3,000 to keep construction going. Artists wishing to donate a piece of work are asked to call Sandra Sweetman at (509) 775-3328. The group has raised $97,000 so far.

Dr. Donald Sebesta and Catherine Spanton, a nurse from Warden, are opening a full-service clinic. The community was left without a doctor or clinic when Dr. Sancho Durano retired last year.
LINCOLN COUNTY
Davenport
Victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault have a new place to turn. Oasis Community Services recently opened its doors on First Street. Volunteering until grant funds can be obtained, Kathy Bridwell, Debbie Morgan and Joy Wyborney are using their experience as advocates to help people in need. The trio worked for the Family Resource Center, which is reorganizing.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY
Newport
Heavy rains have damaged a well-traveled road. Public Works Director Ray King says West First Street needs immediate weight restrictions placed on it. A series of cracks runs the width of the street, which was rebuilt in 1990. Although it wasn’t scheduled for maintenance for several years, King feels the city need to “fix it or lose it.”

St. John-Endicott Hillary Holmes, St. John-Endicott’s junior miss, finished third runner-up at the recent state competition in Pullman. The daughter of Rick and Pam Holmes of St. John is a senior and plans to attend Brigham Young University.

St. Maries
Master Gardener classes in St. Maries have been cancelled because the University of Idaho was unable to hire a Benewah County Extension Agent to organize them. Master Gardeners will sponsor plant clinics beginning at the end of April.

Sandpoint
Destination: Sandpoint!, the tourism marketing arm of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, received a $79,000 grant from the Idaho Travel Council for tourism marketing. One project is to bring 600 Canadians on a tour to Sandpoint in December for a community New Year’s celebration.

Bonners Ferry
Boundary County Commissioners re-appointed the Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday after the adoption of the zoning and subdivision ordinance last week. Appointed were Jim Paulus, Donna Standley, Christopher Boyer, Mary Ann Luedtke, Marc Paulson, Lisa Tanner, Lon Merrifield, Ed Turrence and Jane Kirby. The public will be able to meet with local legislators at a breakfast meeting 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Idaho Fish and Game Building in Coeur d’Alene. Jim Caswell, supervisor of the Clearwater National Forest, will discuss the future of the historic Lolo trail at 7 p.m. Monday in the University of Idaho Forestry Building Room 10. He will discuss management alternatives to deal with growing public interest in the trail and preparation for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial in 2005. The talk is sponsored by the UI Library and the Department of Resource Recreation and Tourism.
