Munoz Breaks Vandals’ Indoor High Jump Record

Hugo Munoz broke the University of Idaho’s oldest indoor track and field record Saturday when he cleared 7 feet, 3 inches to win the high jump competition at the McDonald’s Scoring Invitational in the Kibbie Dome.

Munoz’s mark was three-quarters of an inch better than the 1979 jump of Bob Peterson.

Idaho sprinter Tawanda Chiwira captured first in the 200-meter dash (21.16 seconds) and the 400-meter dash (46.39).

In women’s competition, Eastern Washington’s Seville Broussard took first in the high hurdles (8.31) and the high jump (5-8).

Eastern Washington’s Kurt Kraemer also won two events, the long jump (24-1-3/4) and the triple jump (47-7).

The two-day double-dual meet featured seven schools.

The host Vandals men won four of four meets. In women’s competition, Idaho, Washington and Oregon each won three meets.

Husker Invitational

At Lincoln, Neb., Washington State University sophomore Arend Watkins posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time and meetrecord of 7.80 seconds to win the finals of the men’s 60-meter hurdles in the second day of the 25th annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invite at Lincoln, Neb.

From the nearly 900 athletes entered from 45 schools, there were 70 NCAA Division I qualifying marks, including a dozen automatic qualifying marks.

Watkins, an All-American hurdler from San Jose, Calif., tied the meet-record time Friday night while winning the fourth and final heat of the 60-meter hurdles in 7.83. His Saturday time is the fifth-best in the nation this year and a personal best.

Watkins was the lone WSU victor in the second day of the meet.

Francesca Green Sewell of Kennewick finished second in the women’s 60 meters, tying her career-best time of 7.50.

Cicely Clinkenbeard was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 41-4. Alishia Booterbaugh placed fifth in the 800 meters in 2:10.95. In the 200, Sharika Higgins was seventh in 25.28. Agneta Rosenblad and Ellannee Richardson finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Both ran personal-best times in the prelims Friday night with Rosenblad at 8.54 and Richardson at 8.68.

Next action for the Cougars track teams includes the Vandal Indoor in the Kibbie Dome and the US West Collegiate Invitational at Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 12.

Cyclone Classic

At the Cyclone Classic in Ames, Iowa, Oregon senior Micah Davis, formerly of Mead High, took advantage of the nation’s fastest 3K this year to post a provisional qualifying time of 8:02.06 while finishing 10th. Although Davis won’t know officially until next week, his personal best by 8 seconds may earn him an invite to the NCAAs, depending on the number of automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 4-5 at Indianapolis.
