WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY Lind

With a number of band instruments wearing out, Lind School District is planning a five-year replacement program. This year, a tenor sax, tuba, bass drum, snare drum and trumpet are needed. The school can only budget $5,000 for the instruments.

FERRY COUNTY Republic

Starting in late April, the border between Midway, Canada, and Ferry County will be open 24 hours a day. An officer will staff the crossing from 9 a.m. tp 5 p.m., with video cameras and “port pass” electronic cards during off-hours. For information, call (509)779-4655.

GRANT COUNTY Grand Coulee

The local Chamber of Commerce named Tims’ Four-Corner Texaco as Outstanding Business of the Year. Owners Tim and Michele Arrants made major upgrades to their service station and convenience store. Achiever of the Year honors were given to Susan Miller. Miller spearheaded many chamber events, including the Colorama celebration and Moonlight Madness merchant promotion.

LINCOLN COUNTY Creston

Local members of the Telephone Pioneers of America gave kindergartners a self-esteem boost recently. The group banded together to purchase “I Like Me” books for the students. Each book was personalized with the student’s name and the names of friends, family and teachers throughout the text. The books were also given to youngsters in Wilbur.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

Local kids are awaiting the opening of the Pend Oreille Campus Life Youth Center. Renovated and carpeted, games such as air hockey, pool and skeet ball are being installed. The facility should open by Feb. 27 if all goes well with construction of restrooms and office space.

SPOKANE COUNTY Cheney

STEVENS COUNTY Colville

With the March 9 maintenance and operations levy just around the bend, the Colville School Board is hitting the pavement. Members are talking to all local groups as well as answering questions for individual citizens. An upcoming levy informational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Cafe al Mundo.

WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman

Marc Adams, an award-winning gay author who wrote an autobiography about his abusive experience growing up as a Baptist pastor’s son in rural Pennsylvania, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Washington State University’s Compton Union Building junior ballroom. The talk is sponsored by the WSU Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Allies program. Adams, of Seattle, attended and later worked at Virginia’s Liberty University, a private Christian liberal arts institution founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, a nationally known evangelist.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

Entries for the St. Maries Elks Lodge BPOE Americanism Essay contest will be accepted through Friday. This year’s contest theme is “What the Pledge of Allegiance means to Me,” and is open to students in fifth through eighth grades. Essays must be typed or legibly written in ink, must not exceed 150 words and will be judged for originality, development of theme and mechanics. BONNER COUNTY Sagle

Construction of the new Northern Lights Inc. headquarters in Sagle is expected to be complete by the end of the year. Three buildings will be constructed on nine of the 18 acres Northern Lights purchased at the corner of Monarch and Chevy roads. The new headquarters will be 61,000 square feet.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

Volunteers are needed to help the Bonners Ferry team at the Idaho Special Olympic Winter Games. LATAH COUNTY Moscow

The University of Idaho Women’s Center, UI Greek Life and Washington State University Greek Life are sponsoring a feature-length film depicting the response to date rape on one college campus Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the UI Student Union Ballroom. When a woman is assaulted at a fraternity party by her boyfriend’s best friend, the film, “A Reason to Believe,” realistically chronicles her reaction and the reaction of her peers and the campus community. Writer/director Douglas Tirola and co-producer Christopher Trela will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward.

SHOSHONE COUNTY Kellogg

A review of Kellogg School District management and operations by a team of educators and other experts will take place March 10-12. The team will interview staff, students, administration and community members. Interviews will include detailing the community’s identity and understanding its cultural heritage.

Nominating petitions for two positions on the Troy school board are being accepted until Feb. 25. Petitions must have at least five signatures from registered voters. Petitions are available at the district office at 236 Spokane Ave.
