Conference Focuses On Conserving Fish

How do you save fish before the federal regulators ride in?

Top officials from the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Land Management meet with conservation groups and state fish and game departments for the next three days to answer that question. And this isn’t just a conference, according to American Wildlands, one of the conference sponsors, but a place to come up with the blueprint.

“We are having working sessions to develop an action plan that hopefully can be implemented before a species is listed” under the Endangered Species Act, said Rob Ament, executive director of American Wildlands.

The conference features Tom Fry, acting director of BLM; Forest Service Deputy Chief Paul Brouha - until recently executive director of the American Fisheries Society; Gary Edwards, assistant director of the Fish and Wildlife Services and others.

The conference is today, Wednesday and Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.
