Churches Plan Services For Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is approaching, and many North Side churches are preparing special services. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, the 40 days preceding Easter. Some of the upcoming services are listed below.

Members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church plan to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Mardi Gras, with a pancake and sausage dinner at 6:30 p.m. The evening of fun and fellowship is free, but donations will be accepted.

An Ash Wednesday service begins at 7:30 p.m. In keeping with the solemn tone of the evening, the church is asking all worshipers to enter and leave the sanctuary in silence.

Messiah Lutheran Church, 4202 N. Belt, will have worship services at 2 and 7 p.m. each Wednesday in Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday. Each evening service will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m.

Country Homes Christian Church begins its Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. The church is located at 8415 N. Wall.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3909 W. Rowan, will celebrate Ash Wednesday with a service at 7 p.m.

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan, will have a service at 12:15 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. A light lunch will be served following the service.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church will host worship services at noon and 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. The church is located at 7307 N. Nevada.

The Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside, will celebrate Mass at 6:30 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday.

Salem Lutheran Church begins its Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. The church is located at 1428 W. Broadway.

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Nevada, will have a service at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

World Marriage Day on Saturday

Saturday has been named World Marriage Day and a celebration will be held at St. Patrick Church. The evening begins with Mass and renewal of wedding vows at 5:30 p.m. A reception and dance will follow in the parish hall until 9:30 a.m. Families are welcome.

Dinner, dessert auction Sunday

A spaghetti dinner will be served by church youth at 5 p.m. Sunday at North Addison Baptist Church. A cake bake-off, a pie auction and entertainment will follow the meal.

The evening will conclude with a True Love Waits Commitment Service. During the service several youth of the church will publicly affirm their intentions to practice abstinence until marriage.

Donations will be accepted for the dinner. All proceeds from the evening will be used to fund various youth group summer activities.
