Churches Preparing For Lent Events Planned For Shrove Tuesday, With Services On Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is approaching, and many South Side and West Plains churches are preparing special services.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, the 40 days preceding Easter.

A few churches are also planning celebrations for Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Mardi Gras. Some of the upcoming services are listed below.

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist will serve a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper at 5:30 p.m. The evening will also include the construction of masks that commemorate the Chinese New Year.

The cost is $3.50 per adult, $2.50 per child or $10 per family.

Ash Wednesday will be observed with services at 7 a.m., 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The morning services will be held in the cathedral’s chapel, and the evening service will include hymns and a homily.

The youth of Cheney United Methodist Church, 204 Fourth, will present the church’s Shrove Tuesday meal at 6 p.m. Dinner will be followed by a worship service at 6:30 p.m. and games at 7:30 p.m.

Ash Wednesday will be observed with a service at 7 p.m.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will celebrate Mardi Gras beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The evening will include dinner, music and games.

The cost is $3 for adults and $2 for children age 12 and under.

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., will begin its observance of Ash Wednesday with a pancake dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday. A worship service will follow at 7 p.m.

A free-will offering will be collected for the dinner.

Manito Methodist will also host “Pesta Perpisahan,” an Indonesian festival put on by the fifth- and sixth-graders of the church. The event will include five stations that explain “Pancasila,” the five rules each Indonesian lives by.

Each person will have the opportunity to make an Indonesian flag.

The event will close with an Indonesian-style worship service.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Cheney, 639 Elm, will host services at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. A soup and bread supper will be served at 5:30 p.m., between the services.

Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline, will have a worship service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Ash Wednesday worship service at Centenary United Methodist Church begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The church is located at 1012 S. Freya.

Covenant Christian Church, 5616 S. Palouse Highway, will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 314 S. Spruce, will begin its Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

The opening Lenten worship at Central United Methodist Church begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The church is located at 518 W. Third.

The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside, will have Masses at 6:30 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Showboat dinner theater on Saturday

Bring your valentine to Heritage Congregational Church’s Showboat Dinner Theater Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The church music and outreach committee will present a performance of “The Gambler,” also known as “Repentance Saves.”

A free-will offering will be collected.
